Forums - Gaming - HBO Go Blocked on PS4 by Comcast, Just Like on PS3

Comcast is hot garbage.

I have them, and while my download speeds are good, I have a data cap limit. (I live in one of the cities that Comcast is testing this out.)

I get 350gb a month, and while it feels like alot sometimes. It absolutely blows when MS, and Sony have sales going on, to now include Steam that I have created an account with them recently. I still have about 15 games I have to download on Steam, but I have to do it at the end of the month now to make sure I don't go over. (they charge an overage fee of $10 for every additional 50gb you go over the monthly cap.

Streaming services on numerous devices eats it up quick. Hell, my kids are in elementary school, and have to do homework online now too. 1st world problems...

I'm wary of classifying things as a utility, because like television broadcasting that lends itself to government censorship. I would rather have what we have now than a presumably fairer more equitable internet that is subject to state censorship.

There is already state censorship, but without the benefits of consumer protections. Right now with the various local monopolies, we get corporate censorship, extortion and often terrible service. Regulationg over what the companies that deliver the internet can do isn't the same as regulating the content on it.

I don't know. Besides things like child porn, the internet is pretty uncensored compared to other mediums.

Our internet service is fine, but holy crap our cable goes out like twice a week...Oh, and soooo not looking forward to data caps.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Classifying the internet as a utility will bring monthly limits or they can start charging by the gb. If this happens the all digital future for gamers is going to suck big ones. It will kill the digital market, because it will fell like you are being charged an installation fee for every game. The fee on top of a 50gb download game will suck. My service never goes down so far.. I also use powerline adapters for the PS4 and XB1 and my HTPC, I hate wifi to download anything except podcast.

ISPs can do such things in America? WTF? That shit is illegal.

Read thread.

1. Nothing is being blocked.

2. This is a decision by Comcast as a cable company to not allow their cable  HBO subscribers to use their Comcast accounts to stream HBO  on the PS4 (and other platforms), nothing is happening on the ISP end of things.

HBO and Comcast are both anti-consumer. The new HBONow app is going to cost $15 per month. What on earth makes them think they can charge twice as much as Netflix when Netflix offers more content? Literally the only thing I would want HBONow for is Game of Thrones. The movies and other shows would just be a bonus. $7.99 would be right at that sweet spot where I could completely forget that I'm even paying it. I can't do that with $14.99.

I can see people that are always mobile/ long commutes willing to pay for that HBONow app, as for me. Hell no! The only show I really watch on HBO is Game of Thrones, and I will always watch that on my TV.
I have Comcast, and because I know live next to mountains, I cannot get any over the air channels. The only reason I watch TV is for sports, specifically the NFL. so I have no choice but to get cable, but comcast gives me 5 HBO channels 2 in HD for free with my basic cable package. So I have no need for some HBO app.

I currently have Comcast, but I'm moving soon and will be able to switch to Verizon (bad, but the lesser of two evils) if I want. I'm kind of looking forward to calling Comcast and telling them to shove it in a few months.

"...business terms that have not yet been agreed to between the parties". Who is the other party in this case? Sony? HBO?

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

I hate Comcast, and yet I'm stuck with them as my ISP.

Where I live, we only have 2 choices for Internet: Comcast and Century Link. Comcast are the only ones that offer decent speeds (50 Mbps) and getting Century Link would require a new, expensive modem... On top of Comcast's cancellation fee.

Google Fiber can't come soon enough, it sounds amazing! Internet in the US doesn't seem very good compared to other developed countries...
