Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox Live PC free and console gamers are not happy

I think its pretty unfair concept if you think about it. Xbox live servers are paid by Microsoft who charges its console users for it. PC gamers can play for free because these servers are paid by console owners.
If they want to have PC gamers not paying for online then let them host their own servers.

Look at sony, the y followed the footsteps of ms hence why psn is now under the paywall. Two different ecosystem. Thats my point, hence why gamers shoulnt complain. Conosles never had an ecosytem from the start that was like steam. If they had, we would be a different conversation. There are benefits for paying and one of the benefits is more servers, the oney they make can used to get more games and what not.  When ps3 was free, the multiplayer was horrible compared to xbox live with teh 360.

Is that really a relevant argument in 2015? I don't see it so. If anything the market place we see on steam or origin vs psn or xbl are all carbon copies of each other. Flash sales, free monthly games, stupid cheap pricing on a constantly rotating group of games, thousands of indies etc. Then there's the fact that current gen is more PC like than ever, literally using the exact same architecture.

If Sony was able to provide free online the last two gens then there really isn't a reason why gamers should've paid in the first place. Literally the only thing that made xbl special in its first days, to me at least was voice chat. Oh, and when steam started its ecosystem was pennies compared to what it is now. It would've been suicide to charge for it. MS charged for xbl because back then, broadband was not common and the novelty of playing online whilst on your couch was huge. Again it doesn't mean we should've paid though, MS just knew how to nickel and dime. Remember the mandatory accessory just to play DVDs?

I'm real mad right now. Thinking of canceling my Live subscription.

How much of an impact do people honestly expect a free PC XBL to make when PC gamers have always had stuff so much cheaper? If cost or principle were issues for many, a lot people would have went PC generations ago.

The main issue I'm seeing now is not really the whole PC users having it free, it;s MS throwing their exclusives to PC as some sort of "peace" offering, all that's doing is pissing off Xbox users since they are losing unique games to their system, I know MS is probably trying to transition Xbox users to PC since they are losing in that market anyway but if they keep doing this and the whole news from this online scheme blows up it's going to catch MS for much more flak.

The main thing MS needs to sort out is to keep their current exclusives on Xb exclusive, back ebfore they created the Xbox they had plenty of exclusive PC studios and had many with them at the time, then they made the Xbox and suddenly they started ignoring their main userbase, PC studios they had started to split from them and work with others, some died off and MS killed most of them (like Age of Empires Ensemble) since they focussed on their Xbox userbase, now they want to make amends but it's not going to be that easy or simple, PC users are too used to having their services for free, having multiple options and having an open ecosystem.

MS would/should really just start making new PC centric studios once more, buy a few even and support them to make more PC exclusives to make proper amends to their PC userbase, I can't see PC users ever wanting to pay a sub like XBL so MS really has to drop that dying dream, I know how they failed originally with PC in the past and Xbox gamers snagged it hook line and sinker, thing is it's not going to happen again so they ened to cut that crap out, stop trying to actively think/find a way to scam more money, what's been free on PC since the beginning was the right way all along, that ecosystem is eprfect the way it is, if they can't make much money from how that system works then I suggest they go home and retire, trying to change such a powerful and massive system is something MS will never acocomplish, they should just focus on either fully mergining and transisitoning back to PC or focus on delivering quality games on both platforms, you either please both or you become one.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

I seriously doubt XBL on PC will give out free games, which is the major benefit of said services.I personally think PS+ its the better one of those two, but I've never used any of them though since I like to pay for my games, but just like in the PS3 years there's people who actually see value in these subscriptions.Maybe if the majority of XB owners aren't happy about it, MS would be forced to give free online and XBL gold would be optional like PS+ was on the PS3.
It's not certain that would happen though.. it actually is really doubtful.

MS took the responsibility from third parties and themselves when they started charging consumers for servers. The free games portion was something they got from Sony. The only thing positive about what Microsoft has done in your comment is what they gained from them. Sony is also the reason the stopped charging for subscription based services. Where... were the dedicated servers?

i could be wrong about this but isnt that what PC gamers were doing all along. Wasnt it the companies that started taking away the users ability to host their own servers?

Correct, and in the process they destroyed a rather popular business model of renting servers to individual(s) for games they wanted to host.  We had two servers running for years, one in-house and one we rented from a company.  Those days are long gone.

thats a question you might never get an answer too. I'm still waiting to see why they were really charging in the first place

What is there to be angry about? PC is an open platform where these services almost always are free. I have XBLG because it does give me online on console, doesn't cost much AND give me free games for X1 and 360 every month (thanks to Sony btw :)). So its totally worth it and nothing has really changed since before.

Sony is the reason MS gives you free games, thats not how it was from the start. MS tried to get PC gamers to buy into Xbox Live on PC and failed. Console gamers are going to have to suck it up unless this whole thing blows up. Well then...thats the only way Microsoft would deal with it. Microsoft isn't going to respond to a few gamers, but if the internet blows up like it has the potential to MS will really have to start thinking about what they've been doing.

No lack of security and ignorance is why we have free games.
