Look at sony, the y followed the footsteps of ms hence why psn is now under the paywall. Two different ecosystem. Thats my point, hence why gamers shoulnt complain. Conosles never had an ecosytem from the start that was like steam. If they had, we would be a different conversation. There are benefits for paying and one of the benefits is more servers, the oney they make can used to get more games and what not.  When ps3 was free, the multiplayer was horrible compared to xbox live with teh 360.

Is that really a relevant argument in 2015? I don't see it so. If anything the market place we see on steam or origin vs psn or xbl are all carbon copies of each other. Flash sales, free monthly games, stupid cheap pricing on a constantly rotating group of games, thousands of indies etc. Then there's the fact that current gen is more PC like than ever, literally using the exact same architecture.

If Sony was able to provide free online the last two gens then there really isn't a reason why gamers should've paid in the first place. Literally the only thing that made xbl special in its first days, to me at least was voice chat. Oh, and when steam started its ecosystem was pennies compared to what it is now. It would've been suicide to charge for it. MS charged for xbl because back then, broadband was not common and the novelty of playing online whilst on your couch was huge. Again it doesn't mean we should've paid though, MS just knew how to nickel and dime. Remember the mandatory accessory just to play DVDs?
