Nintendos games would really pop on a retina screen. Imo Nintendo should design their next handheld to look good and stylish and this includes the screen. Sub 300 phones like the z1 compact look quite amazing. So I dont see a reason why Nintendo wouldnt be able to do it in a couple of years for 150.
Nintendo should make an HD handheld. they need to have a better pricing as well since they are indirectly competing with the mobile market as well.
hopefully Nintendo can bring those selective mobile games to its next handheld which they think is worth to have in a Nintendo handheld to be competitive. Else it would really be hard to have an audience outside Japan.

PS4 and Xbone do have more horsepower per dollar though. And since I did buy a Wii U for $400 AUD, I think it's fair to say that yes, I would also have bought one at $200. :p |
Also a Ferrari or a Lamborghini give you more HP per dollar than a Rolls Royce, but a Rolls Royce isn't bought for its horsepower.

Horsepower is pretty important to gamers today though. Not of paramount importance, as 3DS demonstrates, but it does matter a lot, as Wii U vs PS4 shows.
I bet it'll be qHD (540p), just like the Vita. And that's ok imo.
Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Not going to read all the responses here, so if I say something someone else has already said that will be why.
I think whether Nintendo will use an HD screen or not heavily depends on whether or not they will implement other screen technologies (like with the 3D screen, the resolution was sacrificed some for the 3D). If Nintendo does a simple screen system, then HD should easily be a possibility (even with the Nintendo 'standard').
It wont. Why? Because it would be a strain on the battery life (seeing as how it will probably keep the dual screen thing they've been doing for a decade), it would require a faster, more powerful soc (another battery drain), and honestly, as long as people get their Pokemon and Zelda, I don't think they care. I know I don't. Also, the price has to stay reasonable. We all know what happened to the Vita.
Oh and, they'll have no competition (I doubt Sony makes another portable) so they won't have to up the hardware too much. Smartphones can't replace a dedicated handheld so I can see Nintendo not breaking the bank on things like a needless HD screen.

Alright, let's analyze this a bit. Let's say Nintendo makes a hanheld with a 5 inch screen at 800 x 480. That's a PPI of 186.59. Televisions have PPI's anywhere between 50-70, so that would be way too low (less than 3DS) and computer monitors have PPI between 80-120 (about the same as 3ds.) Phones have PPI's above 250 these days, and tablets have PPI's 200-250. There is no device, other than Nintendo's current devices that really use a PPI between 150-200 today. Smartphones did when the 3DS released, and the Wii U's gamepad isn't very cost effective even with its WVGA screen. Even the cheapest of Chinese Android phones ($70-80) have 200 ppi screens. If we are going to assume that such device will have a touch screen as well, and they want to keep the ppi of both screens similar, that would mean they'd have to go with a resistive screen (nintendo doesn't want finger touch.) That would also limit them. Also screen resizing has additional manufacturing costs involved. And Nintendo needs to predict cost/time. Will the costs increase or decrease in price over time? |
Actually, smartphones have a PPI of over 500 these days (Samsung Galaxy S6/Note 4 come to mind). The thing about T.Vs is that the ditance between the viewer and T.V. is usually enough to make a low DPI a non-issue (though they are bringing out 4k and 8k).
Computer monitors and Laptops (looking at you, Macbook air, you ugly screen having peice of crap) have very low resolution screens, but they are bringing out higher res displays (UHD, QHD).

The games look awesome on the gamepad because it basically creates anti aliasing. Going from 4k to1080p also looks much better on a 1080p screen than native 1080p.
if i get 10h or so battery life and a sub 200 pricetag give me 1080p. If not then go for 960x540 because when played on TV ( please bring back a super gameboy!) Nothing will be blurred because 1 handheld pixel will be exactly 4 tv pixels. And a future 1080p handheld will also be able to show clean but lowres images. I HATE how DS games look all blurred on 3DS! Bordermode aso sucks.
Make it powerful enough so not a single game no matter what will run below native resolution and then add 4x anti aliasing or even more so there is no ugly steps
then even 540p is sufficient. ( will look even better than the wiiu gamepad because it will have a smaller screen.
