The PS2 appealed to a broader audience than the Wii did, that's why it got 150m+ sales while the Wii was only just over 100m. PS2 was mainstream, Wii was just hardcore Nintendo fans and casuals.

The Wii died out quickly, that's why. The PS2 appealed to PS1 fans but had a broader audience because it released in more countries and more people had disposable income. For example, Europe well recovered after the Communism debacle. The NES barely got a release in Europe, but the PS1/PS2 came out at the right time.

PS2 did not create any new gamers like the Wii did. If anything, the PS2 was increasing gaming stigma. Just look at this way - the Wii was so mainstream it had a spot in the Oscars. The PS2 would never even dream of that.

So the NES didn't really even save console gaming then, or are you one of those 'globally in the US' people?

From 5th gen to 6th gen there was a 62.75m (42%) increase in sales. From 6th to 7th there was only a 50.86m (24%) increase in sales. Looks to me like PS2 boosted it more, especially since the 360 and PS3 had a hand in that increase while the PS2s competition really didn't do much to help out.

The PS2 didn't create new gamers, however. The PS2 still mainly appealed to the male 14-35 demographic that the PS1 did. The Wii expanded it to new demographics. That's how the Wii saved gaming.

The NES barely got a release in Europe because in the 80s it was still recovering and dealing with Communism. Europe just wasn't ready, but if it was, the NES would have sold well there. Europe didn't become a valuable market in terms of sales til the mid 90s.

Then explain why PC gaming was, and still is, so large in Europe? You talk utter tripe. The NES did nothing for gaming, other than bringing the classic Nintendo IP's to the world.

How? Gaming wasn't in a bad state before the Wii. The PS2 era was a record breaking era. You can't save something that doesn't need saving.

Because gamers were getting stigmatized and games were becoming stale. Without the Wii, gaming would have not been nearly as popular now. The Wii made video gamers go from "those nerds in the basement killing  prostitutes for money in GTA" to your mother, grandpa and aunt having fun. Not saying its true (obviously it's not), but that's the perception.

The Wii isn't a hit now but its audience has moved on to smartphones - in fact, smartphone gaming is the biggest threat to consoles today. We need a Wii today more than ever.

The Wii was a revolution. A revolution Nintendo dropped for some reason after 4 years.

McDonald's guy proceeds to use McDonald's as his example. Love it!

Other myths include ps4 has no games, ps4 games are reviewed fairly, and the main publishers like ea, Activision, Ubisoft and take 2 don't make the lionshare of their money from consoles.

@OP, WiiU has passed Dreamcast sales though.

Myth: PC gamers are all graphic whores. PCs need to be updated every week, etc.

The myth that Nintendo saved gaming, and we should be grateful to them for it. What a load of shit that is.

Nintendo has saved gaming twice though:

- NES: due to the seal of quality, it helped prevent another gaming crash. Also made gaming more mainstream and its games are the basis of gaming today. Super Mario Bros. was loads more advanced than Pitfall, Zelda was entirely new pretty much, etc. etc.

- Wii: Gaming was becoming stagnant, and gamers were getting stereotyped hard. Wii opened it up to a whole new audience and made gaming truly mainstream. Continues today with smartphones now.

PC gaming was still doing fine, NES didn't save anything there.

The Wii never did anything to save gaming, the PS2 made gaming mainstream long before the Wii did.

wii and ps2 both did a lot to expand gaming but nowhere near the gameboy and DS.

Firstly Gamers weren't stigmatised at all during the 6th gen, that is when the mainstream got into gaming that is when games like FIFA became huge, besides how does gaming being 'stigmatised' or whatever have any affect on the industry as a whole? Simple, it wouldn't. The industry would have been fine with either way.

Secondly, games become stale? You must remember the 6th gen differently to everyone else because plenty of people think it had some of if not the best games ever.

You just proved my point really though. FIFA appeals to the 14-35 male demographic.

Ill give you NES but Wii? Please people give that thing way too much credit. THe Cell phone gaming and tablets would have happened if WIi didnt exist and gaming would have expanded that way regardless. I mean if we are being honest the WIi at the end really had no lasting impact. Motion gaming is damn near all but dead. Hell PS2 is still the highest selling console and that was a gen prior so i dont know how one could say gaming was stagnant

stigmatized? Consoles dont sell 160mil plus by being stigmatized

The PS2 did not expand gaming socially. The PS2 is my favorite console of all time too. There was a huge social stigma against gaming in the 90s and 00s, and the Wii helped calm that down.
