Forums - Sony - Sony could be up there with Google and Apple if they would just follow through...

Bringing up Apple is pointless at this point. Apple is like a generation behidn all its competitors these days for pretty much all their products, yet they sell shit tons and for a higher price and break sales records like no business. Makes zero sense

Apple has the power of Brand loyalty. That is what keeps them there. You build something good up for years. People fall in love. No matter how little they do, it's godly.

The primary philosophy behind Apple computers is to create a lifestyle. Microsoft has grown a lot thanks to Apple. Microsofts acquisitions and ventures into the tech world prove just how much Apple has gotten under their skin as far as brand perception and aesthetics are concerned.

Wow you make it sound so easy to be like two of the biggest companies in the world. I wonder why Sony hasn't done it.

They do follow through. Look at bluray. They paid of 20th century fox to win them the battle over from hd-dvd.

Sony thinks its brand alone will sell stuff like they sold so many PS4s without knowing why.

But tbh Microsoft is more like Google and Apple than Sony is. Sony is obviously kind of Samsung.

@others
And btw EyeToy is just a regular webcam running webcam software. The software is what differentiates EyeToy from average joe's PC webcam experience.

In order for Sony to rival Google or Apple they need a new product that is as big as the walkmen.

I expect Sony to continue to downsize and rely on the success of PlayStation, as the back bone of the company. I fear for the mobile division of the company. They make a great product but have no marketing support for it. I expect it to be spun off in a similar way as the tv division.

Sony is retreating from competing against Samsung as a tech giant. Sony will instead specialize it brand like more Western companies do. Sony is going through a transformation that most US companies went through in the 1980's when shareholders clearly became more important than stakeholders.

Big wasted opportunity: like when they stuck to Trinitron CRT too long when competition was quickly shifting to LCD, when portable music shifted to solid state they stubbornly stuck to audio cassette for low end and to niche MiniDisc or awkward full-sized CD players for portable higher-end digital audio. And in this field they stumbled twice, as while they arrived late to solid state digital audio player, Apple entered that market late too, but it was able to grab every opportunity and become leader with the iPod, despite its lower end models being meh and overpriced, when far higher quality Sony models at roughly the same price struggled to emerge from the other competitors. Walkman MP3 wasn't able to emerge even when it had gorgeous models with the first OLED displays higher audio quality and price and all the other features competitive with mid-range iPods. As the product was really good, it can only be marketing fault.

Sony are somewhat in a league of their own sometimes. They have services which compete with Apple/Google/MS and then do electronics which compete again Samsung and others. They are in a weird position. I wonder if there is some parts of their business they completely dominate.

Hmm, pie.

OT:No. Getting as big as Google and Apple is not easy, and Sony is not capable of doing that. Wven if they dominated every business they are in, they would still "only" be the size of Samsung. Google (and Apple even moreso) is on an entirely different level from that.

Besides, Sony is going the opposite direction of this (and rightfully so). They're becoming a smaller, leaner company.

Strangely enough, I expected this to be a Kowen thread.

Seriously?  lol

I would never come up with such a notion.  Its so far off the mark its not even funny.

They can never be anywhere near what Apple and Google are (which is an odd duo to pick to begin with... apple and google arent remotely alike).

They shouldnt be trying to be like either and guess what.... they arent trying to be like either.

Apple, Google and Sony are 3 very, very different companies.

I was thinking stock price, and I expected follow through to mean, 'cut the bleeding'

Really? I thought it was generally considered that Canon lead that. But then it's a very busy market. There are loads of manufacturers all putting out some good technology, Panasonic, Pentax, Olympus, Nikon. Yet, Canon and the latter 3 in the list here are mainly camera manufacturers, so it's another area where Sony is competing.

But I get ya, none the less. And your last point in your post, I agree on. More streamlined company can only mean better profits overall.

Hmm, pie.

Microsoft would be the champion of missed opportunities not Sony.    MS dabbled with tablet years before Apple.  Example would be the MS Courier.  The Courier was announced in 2008 while the first iPad came out in mid 2010.    Even before the Courier there were other Windows tablets on the market.  Anyone got a Windows XP Motion Computing tablet?  I got this tablet in 2006!   I finally had to trash this last month because its Pentium CPU no longer can keep up with today application.

And talk about smart phone.   They dabled with smart phone OS the same time if not before Palm did the Palm phones.  The Palm Treo was before iPhone time and was an awesome smart phone for those old enough to remember.
