| PDF said: In order for Sony to rival Google or Apple they need a new product that is as big as the walkmen. I expect Sony to continue to downsize and rely on the success of PlayStation, as the back bone of the company. I fear for the mobile division of the company. They make a great product but have no marketing support for it. I expect it to be spun off in a similar way as the tv division. Sony is retreating from competing against Samsung as a tech giant. Sony will instead specialize it brand like more Western companies do. Sony is going through a transformation that most US companies went through in the 1980's when shareholders clearly became more important than stakeholders. |
Big wasted opportunity: like when they stuck to Trinitron CRT too long when competition was quickly shifting to LCD, when portable music shifted to solid state they stubbornly stuck to audio cassette for low end and to niche MiniDisc or awkward full-sized CD players for portable higher-end digital audio. And in this field they stumbled twice, as while they arrived late to solid state digital audio player, Apple entered that market late too, but it was able to grab every opportunity and become leader with the iPod, despite its lower end models being meh and overpriced, when far higher quality Sony models at roughly the same price struggled to emerge from the other competitors. Walkman MP3 wasn't able to emerge even when it had gorgeous models with the first OLED displays higher audio quality and price and all the other features competitive with mid-range iPods. As the product was really good, it can only be marketing fault.
