No, because it has a vastly different standard controller. Kerotan sidetracked the whole thing with his focus on the HD part.

I see... and I agree the difference in philosophy, input methods, etc shows more a "disrupture" than a sequence of the previous gen console.

There are some less-informed people who are buying video game hardware and software. Choosing a similar name, in Nintedo's case, triggers some confusion.

Feel free to check out my stream on twitch

I have seen warnings given to others and myself at gamestop about the Wii U being a different system from the Wii. I was already aware of that. In one particular case the mother and child weren't aware of it, they just though it was the Wii so they left the store without buying anything.
My brother for a long time also thought it was just a peripheral to the Wii. I literally had an argument with him about it lol. BTW, this isn't children arguing, I was 32 at the time and he was 42 lol. Was rather funny though.
Beyond a handful of experiences like that, more so shortly after it was released, I haven't seen too much of it. I also haven't seen someone trying to put a Wii U disc into a Wii.
With all that said, I have also seen some parents try to purchase PS4 games for their childrens PS3's. But there tends to be a bit less confusion on that side.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Never, because you can't buy Gamepads

People who think the name alone is a *major* problem or that it cut sales in half are being silly. Need I point out that Xbox One was literally the term being used for the original Xbox? And I don't give two ****s what their rationalization was, that is the dumbest most assbackwards name. Wii U at least isn't literally the same name as a previous unit. Marketing is the big issue, the name confusion is a symptom. No one is having issues keeping the Xbox One straight.

Most wii owners also side tracked the controller because they didn't care about it.

Grandma comes to the store to buy "this popular game on the Playstation". Which of these three would you recomend her?

Does anyone believe she knows the difference? She knows her grandchild plays on the internet and the box in the back does not include Playstation Network - so it has to be one of the other two...

That might be more commonly heard by store employees. People who come on these forums probably don't associate with people who would confuse the two. I can see how it might confuse some parents who go in to buy a new Wii game for their child.
Some stories were going around from store employees about confused customers. Some made signs that explained the difference.

As for how much the WiiU name decreased the sales numbers of the console? I don't think it has affected it much at all.

At others, how would the name generate confusion for WiiU but wasn't a problem on snes/nes (that many wouldn't know standed for super) or master system/Mega Drive or genesis? Or how would they know if x360 or ps3 was better Xbox or ps2 or x1 versus ps4?

Well I think in the case of Super Nintendo, the word indicates a difference in the name a bit more clearly than just one added letter at the end. And back then the game cases were different in shape and size from NES to SNES. While I believe the shape and size of the Wii and Wii U cases are the same, or similar.
Master System and Mega Drive are quite different names, so I don't think it should case any confusion. And as for Playstation 2 to Playstation 3, I think most people are aware that sequels are often branded with an ascending number, and associate it as such.
This is undoubtedly the reason why Microsoft feel they can't name their consoles with a proper numerical order. Because they would always be one number behind Playstation, and sound inferior to some casual buyers.

OMG LOL, which JB is this? Gold!

I know that game.co.uk put WiiU in the Wii section (different than ps/xbox), some stores do it in physical shelves and several clerks are obnoxious. But I think the impact is small and the confusion only worsen other issues instead of being a real issue itself.

I agree with this analysis.

Believe what you want, but the Wii U is most certainly not an HD version of the Wii.

because it doesn't output 1080p for all games right?

Because the WiiU doesn't target the same market as the Wii did. comparable to the Wii that didn't targeted the same market as the gamecube.
