Forums - Gaming - There won't be another handheld who will beat the PSP!

have to also bear in mind that the PSP actually have a very long lifetime. Sony released the PSP in, what, 2003, and did not release their successor until 2011?/2012? for a handheld that is quite a long time

also the odds are that the 3ds will pass it because generally Nintendo maintains decent software for all of their platforms until the very last minute. I do also agree with a few posts that mention that the roms ability of the PSP helped in its sales. you can't even count the # of people trying to get rid of their older PSPs these days online who mention 'has roms of every such and such game!'. certainly it being one of the first handhelds with strong multi-media abilities helped a lot

at any rate sort of a weird thread to bring up considering that its competition in the same generation (DS) outsold it by like double. also awkard considering how terrible the Vita is doing. to put it in perspective, the PSP sold, what, 80 million, and the Nintendo DS sold like 150 million. in this generation the PSVita has sold 10 million and the DSi sold 50+ million. that's a worse ratio dramatically for Sony's handheld. I think it just points to the fact that if time were warped and you had PSP today it's as if it would sell that well. perfect timing and generation (sort of like the Wii in that regard)

We are probably at peak smartphone gaming right now. Gamers are starting to realize that $1.99 freemium apps on a touchscreen cannot compete with a handheld in anything except graphics (and that's really counter-productive; the Vita has production values too high for its own good.) Once the market internalizes this in another 3-4 years, you will see gaming shift back to handhelds. Smartphones obviously won't go away--they're too useful--but smartphone gaming is likely going to be an interesting indy market and not a mainstay of the industry.

This will be a weak handheld generation for sure, but I think the handheld market will come back around.

No one ever thought that mobile games (or at least, the vast majority of them) could compete with handheld games interms of quality. Nothing's changed or will change; People who are only interested in gaming as a fun distraction when they have nothing better to do will continue playing those dirt-cheap games on their phones and people who are more invested in gaming as a hobby will still buy handhelds for the higher-quality games.

You do realize that many PSPs sold were sold in responce to rampant piracy right? Even so, sales are sales and 3ds probably wobt beat psp but thats a generation behind wher circumstances and pricing were way different. Honestly though, i dont see Nintendo with a traditional handheld next gen.

That is bullshit imo, piracy has nothing significantly to do with PSP sales. It is just an excuse for some gamer..

I have to disagree, man. From my experience plenty of people bought psps to pirate games (at least in Greece and Cyprus). I understand that your experience is different, but I think you should be more open to other people's observations. Psp is my second favourite console ever (right behind psvita), so I, personally, am not saying it as an excuse.

Might be exaggerated by me, sorry dude...
But here in Germany I don't know any person who bought the PSP for piracy and I do know a lot gamer in my surroundings.

Your favorite console is the Vita? Nice to hear that as the Vita Doctor, this makes me happy. ^^

DS still sold close to 160m. I can guarantee with the releases like MH4U, LoZ: MM, Codename STEAM, Bravely Second, Fire Emblem If, Final Fantasy Explorers (in the west) AND the next Pokemon Gen (which they have always done two gens per console basically) I am pretty confident that the 3DS will surpass the PSP.

Ds is the best handheld of all time. That's it.

And, in fact, is easy to beat PSP numbers. Nintendo just need to make things right

PSP sold over 80M units, this is incredible good for a handheld that was the first handheld made by Sony. Handhelds are dying out in America and Europe because of the smartphones which are getting more and more important in our society. I don't even think that the 3DS can outsell the PSP and the 3DS got some of the greatest Nintendo games ever (The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of TIme; The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask; Xenoblade Chronicles). 3DS sales will be around 75M lifetime imo. PSP was a selling-beast and the best handheld ever! There is no chance that another handheld can beat the PSP, the handheld market is shrinking year by year and 3DS had a great software support and didn't manage that!

Actually I fully agree.  The PSP and DS came out in the golden age of handhelds.  It was a time when handhelds could utilize powerful hardware and yet phones were not yet using the same hardware.

^This will never happen again, and mobile will continue to dominate more and more as time goes on.  Nintendo should be happy if their next handheld even sells 40m.

Hey, maybe not. Nothing to get all offensive about. I'm just saying that everyone I know who owns one, has hacked it to get pirated games.
