Forums - Gaming - There won't be another handheld who will beat the PSP!

We are probably at peak smartphone gaming right now. Gamers are starting to realize that $1.99 freemium apps on a touchscreen cannot compete with a handheld in anything except graphics (and that's really counter-productive; the Vita has production values too high for its own good.) Once the market internalizes this in another 3-4 years, you will see gaming shift back to handhelds. Smartphones obviously won't go away--they're too useful--but smartphone gaming is likely going to be an interesting indy market and not a mainstay of the industry.

This will be a weak handheld generation for sure, but I think the handheld market will come back around.

What are you basing this on? Is there any evidence that sales of mobile games have been declining?

Ummm, the PSP wasn't the best selling handheld ever. In fact both the gameboy and the DS beat it by nice margins, and the 3DS will probably edge it as well, though I'm not betting cause IDC for Nintendo.

I don't think the 3ds can sell an additional 30M with the upcoming plans Nintendo has for it.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

Where did I say that? I said that it is the best handheld ever made.

Some people are clearly underestimating the handheld market. You think there will never be another handheld to sell more than 80M? Not even that alone, you also say that there is "no chance" of that happening. 3DS will already be really close to that, so are you really sure?
I'd definitely take that bet. The 3DS or the next gen handheld(s) will prove you wrong already.

Ok, so you want to bet with me! Let's say 1 month avatar and signature control? lol

You never know what innovations may come around the corner but for now I'd say its a fair bet. 3DS will be extremely lucky to touch PSP numbers and if the market is on decline as many have concluded the next round HH consoles should have a roof of 70m.

I wonder how you're going to try to spin Vita's numbers eventually.

By upcoming plans, you mean "nintendo will ONLY release ports and remakes for 3ds from now on"? that's not happening.

It depends of the future of Nintendo consoles. If they decide to go for the fusion project and they succeed, I could easily see another handheld reaching GBA and PSP levels.

Also, the problem of mobile and tablets is that markets that grow too fast in short amounts of time are very unstable, and tend to crash almost as bad. I can see some kind of mobile crash in less than ten years. Like a couple of the biggest mobile developers and distributors going under, leaving an oversaturated market and consumers with no means to identify what's good, what's bad or what's malware in disguise, and massive competition will deminish any possible profit made by small developers, so a lot of them will fall too.

Sony will prolongue the lifespam of the Vita as much as they can, that machine is advanced enough to survive on two generations. The thing is that Sony will probably concentrate in mobiles and other devices by adding some sort of PS chip on them.

Handhelds will survive, the idea of gaming on the go is too good to loose. In fact, with all of these streaming experiments the industry is doing, I can see growing in a couple of gens, just to play the PS5 or Nintendo Megaton on the go.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Sure but how many big original releases does it have in Q1/Q2. All of the systems biggest franchises have been and gone, things are going to go downhill. N3DS only provided a momentary boost for Japan now the system is back to be down significantly. The west will be the same.

Also didn't the 3DS only manage 10m last year? Great number but it'd need to sell 10 this year, 10m next year and then another 10m to reach the PSP by 2018. I don't see that happening and I doubt the system will still be on shelves in 2019.
