Go psp! Yeah I doubt it will be beat

common the only reason PSP reached 80 million is because it was a portable media player and a device for retro games to play ROMs on. This is the exact reason many people in my circle of ps fans had it for. Was great for what it did at the time. We all loved it.

Once smartphones come out those functions got absorbed into the phone and you did not need to have two devices in your pocket.

Possibly. The 3DS will struggle to get there and assuming Nintendo is alone next go around in the handheld space we may see a total market of 60 million.

The biggest thing I see is how no under 12 I know wants or cares about dedicated handheld devices. They all want phones or tablets. If this trend continues could see a lost generation for that segment of the industry.

Ya I agree that multimedia functions were just as big of a selling point as the games were.

On PSP u could listen to music, watch movies, browse the internet, along with having top notch games. Before smartphones/tablets, PSP was pretty much the ultimate all-in-one multimedia device.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

3DS is one of the worst names for a console ever. Similar to the Wii U. If Nintendo calls their next handhelf a Gameboy it will fly off the shelves, I'll buy it also.

Don't you think that the bolded is a bit of an exaggeration? One of the main reasons? Sure. The only? I beg to differ.

Well since the PSP is dead, just like the Wii I don't see why something dead cannot be ebaten by something alive and evolving, if the 3DS does not reach those numebrs then nintendo's next handheld will, meanwhile Sony have practically given up all hope for the handheld market.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Do not underestimate Nintendos Handhelds...

We are probably at peak smartphone gaming right now. Gamers are starting to realize that $1.99 freemium apps on a touchscreen cannot compete with a handheld in anything except graphics (and that's really counter-productive; the Vita has production values too high for its own good.) Once the market internalizes this in another 3-4 years, you will see gaming shift back to handhelds. Smartphones obviously won't go away--they're too useful--but smartphone gaming is likely going to be an interesting indy market and not a mainstay of the industry.

This will be a weak handheld generation for sure, but I think the handheld market will come back around.
