the 3ds is still selling 100k+ a week even with the new 3ds being very close. I can totally see n3ds, price cuts and software moving 25m hardware in the next two years and then 10m+ in the rest of it's life.

So just to clarify, the 3DS sold 10m in the last year and you think it will sell 25m in the next 2? So you think with the 3DS is going to be up significantly YOY in 2015 and 2016? Highly unrealistic but none of us can predict the future.... How the N3DS sells after march should be interesting.

Don't you think that the bolded is a bit of an exaggeration? One of the main reasons? Sure. The only? I beg to differ. |
nope the only reason it reached 80million because it being the first real portable multimedia device.
If it was just a gaming device it would probably account for 40-50million.
The multimedia functionality on a protable was th emost talked about hype of the device for its time. Hence why it launched better tha DS (well in AUS at least). Everyone was putting their video, music and roms on it. was great times.

WOAH
The PSP being the superior gaming machine with almost PS2 level graphics, running GTA3 at launch during a time where people were actually excited by consoles experiences on the go, having tons of support out the gate and being sonys first portable console were the reason it launched better then the DS. Remember people thought it was given the PSP would wipe the floor with the DS. TBH it would have had nintendo not found their feet with casual market (brain training, nintendo dogs etc).
Multimedia definitely helped PSP for sure but we are undoubtably exaggerating the relevance of multi-media functionality suggesting it doubled sales. UMD films failed horribly, MP3s were already all the rage on much more practical devices....

Your logic makes no sense to me. How does that make it the only reason? It's like saying that even if it had zero games, it would have still sold 80m. You can say the main reason, but the only makes zero sense.

| Dr.Vita said: PSP sold over 80M units, this is incredible good for a handheld that was the first handheld made by Sony. Handhelds are dying out in America and Europe because of the smartphones which are getting more and more important in our society. I don't even think that the 3DS can outsell the PSP and the 3DS got some of the greatest Nintendo games ever (The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of TIme; The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask; Xenoblade Chronicles). 3DS sales will be around 75M lifetime imo. PSP was a selling-beast and the best handheld ever! There is no chance that another handheld can beat the PSP, the handheld market is shrinking year by year and 3DS had a great software support and didn't manage that! |
Why are you using the PSP as the handheld to beat? There were 3 Nintendo Handhelds that outsold the PSP.
Nintendo DS - 154.88m
Nintendo Gameboy - 118.69m
Nintendo Gameboy Advance - 81.51m
Playstation Portable - 80.82m
Nintendo 3DS - 50.57m+
Reasons why the 3DS isnt selling better is because of its own competition. The 2DS and New 3DS are reasons why it wont hit past 80 million units. It doesnt have to either as the 3DS has passed the torch to the New 3DS to take over.
PSP best handheld? Thats clearly your opinion. Thats completely different to my opinion.

3DS, 2DS and N3DS are included in the 3DS sales, since thy're all just versions of the same system. So even all of them combined won't reach the 80 million mark, according to Dr. Vita.
And I don't get why it's a problem that he's using PSP sales as the threshold?
Sony needs to release a playstation smartphone with their own OS then everything will be fixed

I dont understand why the PSP? If this was a race why would you use the runner that finished 4th as a threshold?
3DS probably won't make it, but the 3DS had a bungled launch. Smartphones can actually be good for the handheld market if companies are smart about it.
