this is really about what the manuf. want! it is a easy to include chip on a single board computer or even a Pc Mobo, in other words no expensive tv tuner cards needed anymore! for a Pc for instance it. its cheap

nobody wants tv on his mobo, thats why they dont sell..

i had a mobo with tv tuner allmost 10 years ago, got it cheap because i had problems with my mobo and they couldnt replace it so they gave me a bigger one. it worked, but my next mobo hadnt a tv tuner because i never used it...

again this is not freaking 10 years ago, this is now!, again this is a solution for the companies that produce electronics its a cheap option to include in the build. Apple and Samsung, LG etc . no unsightly antenna sticking out.

its now viable for companies to include, without much increase in costs!

I don't see any use for this, especially in Germany and given how streaming is getting more popular year over year but let them develop - I guess they have other targets in mind.

we had tv for phones in germany for 10 years, nobody wanted it and im not sure if its still a thing.  watched some wc 2006 on a phone because reasons...

They were bad because they also consumed a lot of power. Add to this that dvbt is dead in Germany and there is no sign dvbt 2 will change this.

well it because tv is so cheap in germany.  i pay 25€ for cable tv and internet/phone.   DVDT just cant compete with those offerings.

its cable or satellite, all other is dead.

For broadcasting, this is true, yes. Dvbt 2 will also be with hevc iirc so this will require new hardware, too, which will be a show stopper for the technology.

again its not just for Dvbt 2 standard, as i said its also can be for NTSC standard at that, with Playstation Vue you would also have cable all on the same smartphone or Tablet

ehm and what is new? nobody wants tv anymore, thats why they all dropped it...

some people would not agree with you, when every smart phone or tablet could not only be a a smart Device and now be a TV for real cheap for low cost to add to any new phone or tablet or hell now Pc's right on the mobo and cut down on costs in existing TV's cost for the chips they use, which makes more room for other chips and functions you may want to build into the electronic device.

smaller size is nice, but its nothing new, we had tv phones 10 years ago, the people dont want it, thats why its gone.

we've had a phone with a digital tuner before?

i've rejected tv on a phone before because

A) streaming things like netflix or whatever doesn't work because my phone's data connection is much too slow.

B) even if it worked my data plan isn't large enough to stream anything without paying ridiculously expensive rates.

C) downloading something in advance so that i can watch without streaming is too labor intensive and phone storage is too small to put much on it anyways.

a digital tuner seems like it would get around all those issues.  i would only get publically availible tv like nbc or cbs but i only have rabbit ears on my home tv anways so it's the same delivery i have there.  sounds good to me.

Exactly, those Tuners are not really made for North american market, let along are freaking small as this and has no where near the Quality or built for digital content of today. i have had plenty "java" based phones and some smart phone's with these so called good Tv tuners..No way as good as this one.

And to top it off no data needed.its completely over the air ! no data, thats 24 TV channels without need of cable!

its nothing new, and could be done now easyly, but nobody cares for tv.

and they still need an antenna, the chip doesnt change anything about the need of a antenna to get a good signal.  its like radios, they till need an antenna if you wanna get a good signal, and chips cant change this fact, its the physik, stupid...

the old tuner didnt needed "data" too, TV never needs "data". they just used other tech to get the signal to you. small digital tv tunder arent new too, we had them  in europe in a lot of high end "smart"phones. and we have much better free tv than the us. but nobody cared, and without a big home market for this tech it died realy fast. like i said, cable and satellite tv are cheap and have more channels(you can get a satellite antenna for 50€ with tuners for 200+ free channels).

maybe there is a market for it in the states, but the tech behind it isnt new.

Could be done easy?  If that was the case other companies would also be doing it right now, you keep saying there is no demand, or that no one wants it. But the ironic thing is how many would want an FM radio chip inside their phone that , as you could say no one wants; but yet companies put it in there and now people when they buy the smartphone it most of the time already has a FM radio chip included.

And this is the best response yet, you states this:

Stop and think about what you just wrote for a min, and think about how the FM radio chips work inside smart phone's...which is quite ironic you brought them up!

Example: you said it need's a physical antenna......LMAO you are correct it does, so how do you get one on a smartphone today WITH NO ANTENNA STICKING OUT...Hmmmm, there has to be some way right?

Just like smart phones that has a FM radio chip included that all you do is plug in ear buds or external speakers to pick up reception!

so you think intern antennas are free and take up no space?  they use the bluetooth/wlan chip for fm, so there is no need for anoter antenna(wlan/bluetooth needs an antenna too).  and the iphone had fm for years, they just didnt cared for it and hardware locked it.

I never stated it was not going to take up space, What i stated by the size and its stacked configuration that being it is small and low power requirements, than many companies could infact put such a chip inside. You seem so hell bent on claiming that "no one wants such a chip" that is like saying no one wants such a higher class Cmos camera sensor because the 8MP one is Good enough!

its not about the consumer, its about what a smartphone could offer to the consumer at a cheap price, and it allows Companies to offer such functionality for their smartphone's, Tablets, and Pc's because if they do not some one will!

Look I know your standpoint on this and you have been very clear in your opinion, one i do not agree with, but what i stated is quite True, if Sony was going to sell off its Mobile, why are they spending more investment money on Technology that "no one wants" ?

its one thing to say, its not viable, or its pointless, its another thing for the company to invest million's on million's on a chip that as you keep saying "no one wants"

water proofing your smartphone was seen to be a gimmick by many until it was being used on many companies phone's and it become big additional thing to have for your smartphone.

its not really wanted feature, until it becomes a wanted feature.

Mainly by other companies offerings other than Sony, the ironic thing is now Sony seems to be making more technology iP that other companies are willing to buy components off of, so why would Sony stop doing that now?

This is for specific markets. Probably more for places like Africa and other emerging markets.

I think your take is a bit off on the implementation, you are thinking sony only for some odd reason... that wouldnt be the plan here. This will be sold to all manufacturers (if they arent already developing their own). Nice little idea though and could make a bit of cash, but it does seem to fly in the face of where TV is going.

Exactly.

Its no wonder some in this thread don't understand this because of "US is the World" thinking being default.

TV is still big in emerging markets, and Smartphones are growing "exponetially" there as well. Merging the two is a significant ace to become the dominnt brand in places like India or Africa.

Addendum: At the very least they can sell the chip to manufacturers that make phones cheaper as well.

Neither was the original iPhone.
