Forums - Nintendo - Is Splatoon being rushed?

That sounds more like a "Nintendo thing" than a rushed thing cause if its rushed, then they might implement it in the future which I highly doubt they will

It wouldn't split the userbase if all matches aren't forced to 4 versus 4. Why not allow 3 vs 3 or lower if its too difficult to find 8 players for 4 vs 4? And why not include bots in 4 versus 4?

4v4 was likely chosen given the map scales and what was tested to be the most exciting number of players, or could be the max given performance considerations.

Including bots could make sense but other games don't make use of bots (such as League) and work perfectly fine without it. There would need to be an interface made by a game hoster (which they possibly want to avoid) for something which is unnecessary for many successful games today.

And with more development time, they could find map scales that could be just as exciting for 3 vs 3 matches or lower. And stop comparing Splatoon to a MOBA game. Titanfall, a shooter, has bots for its online multiplayer.

Nintendo is trying to position Splatoon as their next Mario Kart and Smash Bro. They should put as much effort in making it as appealing as possible especially when its genre is highly competitive. This means having just as many modes as other online shooters in the market.

1. No voice chat in random online matches

Whenever I play Halo, Gears, Cod or whatever on Xbox live no one talks anyway, or they are annoying kids. It would be good to talk with friends though, this hasn't been diconfirmed if I'm correct.

2. No bots available in 4 vs 4 matches

I believe the match won't start without 8 players which makes sense in a game like this. Nintendo often replaces players who drop out with bots, which I think will be the case here.

3. No online modes other than the one 4 vs 4 match in random online matches

A bit disapointing if true, yes.

However, I'd wait for more information before calling the game bare-boned or tiny. Single player might be lengthy, and multiplayer might still be more extensive than we think. Maybe there are different types of 4 vs 4, or maybe it is so captivating it will keep you busy for a long time. I'm still looking forward to this game!

Nintendo has their syrupy-sweet kids/family brand to maintain, that's why they won't allow voice chat. It's not for time issues.

1 mode? 4v4? no team speak? and I'm willing to bet you can't even drop in, in a game already in progress. R.I.P

Why would you want to drop in on a game already in progress?

think the opposite, you are playing a 4v4 game, one guy quit, wouldn't you want this guy to be replaced with an other player or do you rather play 3v4, I know this used to be a major problem in online games like Halo back in 2006

It's not an issue in League, why should it be an issue here?

It's not even the same type of games, and people bitch and moan everyday on reddit about that, there's a reason why you get a surrender button at 20 min and you can get banned for leaving to many games.

The match won't start until 8 players, but it's still possible bots will take over when a player drops out. (It's done this way in Mario Kart 8 I believe) At least that's how I interpreted it.

If it makes sense to compare it to a moba game, then I will. Titanfall can have what it wants, it doesn't make it good. League is a hugely popular game and is a good benchmark.

They could make maps for 3v3, but that again would split the available number of players for a given mode and they don't want that for reasons you refuse to argue. If they have one 3v3 mode and one 4v4 mode, people waiting to be matched up in one mode will not be available in the other mode.

Having many modes doesn't make the game more appealing per se, again League is mostly played on Summoner's Rift. It doesn't need the other modes to be successful. Sure no point spitting on them but they are added features, not fundamental. If the player base proves solid, then they could add in those other features.

@ Bold: It doesn't

3v3 is an option to allow other 4v4 modes.

Here let me give you an example on how Splatoon can handle multiple modes with bots included (italics represnts what the menu would look like):

Online menu: Select your mode!

Modes: Turf war, death match, capture the flag, Juggernaut, etc.

Select match type: 2vs2, 3vs3, 4vs4!

You've selected 4 vs 4 and wait for others to join. You see only 3 people show up. After a minute, a menu appears asking all players if they want to start the game with currently available players. All players vote "start game with currently available players."

You then choose your map, etc, and game starts.

And if choosing the amount of players needed is an issue, the select match type can be skipped entirely and the bots will always fill in to make a 4vs4 match.

@bold. A sensible idea. Not make it or break it but interesting nonetheless.

It would be even better if they let players host a room and allow players to join. The room can tell others what modes they're playing, the maps, and even how much players they want. Like Halo 1. Seeing how Mario Kart 8 online tournament mode has this, Splatoon should as well.

Street Fighter IV had 1 online mode: 1v1 and with barely any chat speak (most people mute their opponents).

Also, when I play 5v5 league I barely chat with my teammates except for some minor things.

These are non-issues.

Does Splatoon come with dozens of unique characters, each with their own play style and skill sets? No? Well then i'm sure you can see why that's a terrible example.

You're making the assumption that because you don't care about these things, that they're inherently unnecessary. Some of the disappointed people in this thread have been openly exited about Splatoon for months. Do you believe your opinion is worth more than theirs?

Regardless, this isn't likely to stop many buying and enjoying the game, but that doesn't stop them being aloud to express disappointment at it missing features and content standard to games of the same genre.

playstation all-stars was considered "incomplete" because it had less content and features than smash.

ergo,. splatoon is "incomplete". there is no getting around that people will compare to what they already know.

So the game has no chat voice and now is a shit, like Mario Kart 8 and Smash.... oh wait...
