Forums - Gaming - The extra mile...

The most recent example for me would be Far Cry 4 if only for Pagan Min, who is not simply one of the best villains in a video game, but one of the most complex and intriguing characters to ever grace a game (especially after that secret ending).

It's far from a perfect game, as the gameplay at its core is familiar, safe and doesn't do anything spectacular that sets itself apart, and the golden path storyline is far less interesting than what's going on behind the scenes with Pagain, but there is a wealth of things to do, riding elephants, dive bombing convoys from a helicopter with a wingsuit, and that amazing setting with those Shangri-la and Himalaya sections adding a nice bit of flavor to the overall experience and breaking the tedium, which can build up while you're exploring to be honest.

The Super Smash Bros games and Kid Icarus: Uprising are crammed with content. It seems it is a property from Masahiro Sakurai as a dev, that he wants to go the extra mile for the gamers. Another more recent example would be Hyrule Warriors, that has a lot of modes and content.

Dragon Age Inquisition is the most recent for me. Completely redeemed what BioWare did with DA2 and is easily my GoTY for 2014.

I've never played a DA game. So I should skip the second one?

I find that with Far Cry, the enjoyment comes from all the extra things to do. Call me spoiled but I kind of expect it now.

The Paper Mario dialogue comes to mind

Skyrim for one. No it isn't perfect, but they packed it to the rafters and put a lot of effort into building that world.

Xenoblade Chronicles mainly cause holy crap the story was an epic of awesome scale, something so many games lack. I mean it's around 60 hours to finish that main story if you really push for it.

BioShock Infinite for me felt like it was really polished like nobody's business with a lot of attention to detail. There's three games I felt went he extra mile in three different ways.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver version (It had about 80+ hours in side quests).
Super Smash Bros. U (This game can last you a year if wanted to complete fully).
Xenoblade Chronicles (Main Adventure is at least 60+ hours long, plus about 90+ hours in side quests too).

Non Nintendo Games
Valkyria Chonicles I-III (over 80+ hours of gameplay each)
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions ( 80+hour side questing)
Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles (4 games in 1 disc)
Mega Man Powered Up (Tons of unlockable Character, bosses, stage editor, different versions of Mega Man etc).
Devil May Cry 4

A lot of games like...

Fire Emblem - Support Conversations, loads of sidequests, and multiple playthroughs with different characters. Great story and perfect balance as well.

Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones - More Support Conversation, skirmishes, Tower of Valni, and Creature Campaign. Just as good as a story from its predecessor, well-balanced but optional skirmishes to buff up your units.

Fire Emblem: Awakening - Completing atm!

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 120 Green stars to collect and Grandmaster Galaxy. Also the game was more challenging than the predecessor which I liked and Yoshi!

Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl (and Project M!) - BUTT load of replayability, variety of ways to battle friends with special multiplayer mode, adventure mode, trophies, etc. Also the deep competitive level specifically for Melee and Project M.

Super Paper Mario - Had (I think) 3 versions of 100 towers of enemies of some sort, great but tearful story, great depth of gameplay, and unique 3D mechanics that led to interesting strategies and boss fights that I thought were clever and fun. Also the game was very humorous.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles - The addition of playing Tails and Knuckles, Super Emeralds which enables hyper sonic/knuckles and super tails, extensive amount of levels, unique and useful powerups, and overall good replayability.

Pokemon HeartGold - Decent generation to begin with, after finished with the main quest you have the WHOLE Kanto region to explore, and beat the revered (and hardest) pokemon trainer Red.

Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Buttload of sidequests that were also heartbreaking and characters gave me a reason to help them, unique and useful transformation mask, and adequete temples and all.

Team Fortress 2 - Free-to-play that has access to EVERYTHING that a premium (those that paid something) player has in terms of game content, such as Mann vs Machine, Capture the Flag, Control Points, Payload, unique 9 classes that stands out from each other that increases strategy and creativity as well as weapons you can find.

There's probably way more that I just forgot to mention

Super Mario 3D World. After beating the main story, you get Rosalina and 3 more worlds to do, and champion`s road. Now that`s going the extra mile. : )
