I think people leave because the community can be rather hostile and aggressive towards people and their views at times

I came here for the numbers, but quickly found out that they are very unreliable. So I stayed for the community, soon to find out that you're not even allowed to post the truths about certain consoles as people get insulted so easily.
In the end, the only thing that made me not to go away was Rolstoppable's NFL Prediction thread.

I was away quite a long time and just came back myself, mostly just lurking though, don't have much to say.

People...seriously...it has more to do with the info lull than anything else. We're here to discuss changes in the industry...right now there just aren't any. There are no new games, peripherals, or services being announced. Many people are back at school, working, playing games, and when they come here they probably can't be bothered to discuss who will win e3 6 months from now.

I've seen this happen every year I've been active on this site...and to many who post a lot it's kind of but like depression. Suddenly the arguments don't seem as exciting, food doesn't taste as good, and you wonder if it'll ever be like it was. I can assure you...when whatever megaton gets dropped, any users that drifted away will report back here to watch the fallout.

What makes you say that? Be honest. 

people that leave are usually the ones that take the forums too seriously and spend too much time here, I just pop in and out from time to time and I'm just fine here.

i like to pop in and out in this website... but now I spend more time on groups closer to my area and do the usual meet ups... but I like the anonymity nature of this site sometimes... but yeah I prefer to the one where you can connect "more"
