Forums - Nintendo - Why no PS PLUS type service on Wii U?

The free games that a service like that would give, people would have already bought them and Nintendo should get more return than the 50usd yearly which is around 10 VC NES games.

A service like that would make Nintendo owners buy even less eShop titles, heck I only buy eShop titles when they go on discount. If they started offering a subscription I wouldn't buy anything digital and just play what the Nintendo overlords decide to throw my way.

There would be less of a point to the eshop and even then there will be people that won't like the model, even with the claim of "optional" it's still there and would piss some people off, with all 3 doing the same thing it leaves peope with PC being the only alternative to get away from all that.

I don't see paying to play online as a thing that justifies itself, not when Nintendo does it for free along with PC.

Also even if they were giving away "free games" for $50 a year they would have to actually be free to start with and not cost a sub, that and actually be free to keep forever without having to pay a continious sub, the thing most people do not udnerstand is that type of service isn't actually giving you free games, you are paying money to a sub service, the games are not free other you'd be given them without passing a single dime along with the fact that you stop paying and you can no longer play those games until you pay more money, a proper skinners box tactic if ever I saw one, keep drip feeding people and they will believe it;s the norm and acceptable, they'll even rebel against logic and claim it's true value.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Ahh yeah, I forgot about that, the free games are only available until your subscription last. That's why you can't compare a normal year's purchase of digital titles with the yearly 50usd subscription, hence why it is cheaper.

So those 50usd subscription covers the free online, connectivity extras, club discounts and sub rentals.
Could be worth it for some people.

One of the reasons I've gone with a PC/Wii U combo for this gen is to avoid subscriptions just to play online.

amiibos bring in more money per year. Just launch Mario in all of his power-up forms he has had over the years, throw in all Pokémon and whatever else you can think of.

No not even close. Sony has 10.9m PS+ accounts. That equates out to 545 million in revenue per year. A number that's only going to go up as the PS4 continues to sell very well. Nintendo would have to sell roughly 42m Amiibos per year to match that revenue. Which clearly isn't going to happen. Money from Amiibos is never going to even come close to the money generated from PS+/Gold. Which is why Nintendo should definitely consider locking multiplayer behind a paywall next gen. People aren't going to like it, but they'll pay it.

Well, if you look at it from that angle, then a subscription service for Nintendo is certainly not going to match the revenue generated from PS+ and Gold either.

I was going by the amount of subscribers one could realistically expect on the Wii U and if we say it's going to be about a million like suggested in the OP, then selling 5m amiibos in any given year is already more than enough to beat a subscription service, nevermind that the profit margins are considerably higher on amiibos because Nintendo sells a plastic figurine rather than a service where they have to continually hand out games. Now add that amiibo functionality has the potential to create additional sales for games (because people might give them a second look to get more out of their bought amiibos) while a subscription service would decrease the sales of games (because people would hold off on buying when they can hold out until certain titles become available as part of the subscription).

So in summary, amiibos are much more beneficial to Nintendo's bottom line which is what the OP was going for.

My idea is more beneficial to you the consumer.  I've played so many quality ps3 games and still have many to get through.  All for a fiver a month. Maybe nintendo won't do it but a lot of fans would get great value from this.

If you are going to reply saying not enough games then I say make a system aimed at 3rd parties,  entice them back and then set this up.

Nintendo has stated on multiple occasion that they were against charging for an online service. And Nintendo already gives away games with their current club, a practice that will probably carry onto what replaces it.

All Nintendo really needs to do is improve on what they have. They will never have a Live based service. But I would rather have a free service that is workable, than a service that is covered in ads and takes money from me.

My thread didn't ask why they don't charge for online.  I meant a ps3 type service that offers free online and an optional subscription that for just $5 a month will offer you two games a month.  What sounds bad about That?

Well with nintendo you get games for buy games with no extra charge.

WUT??

Before online multiplayer was behind a paywall, PS+ had around 2m subscribers on an install base of 80m PS3's. Based on that, if the Wii U had a similar service, it would probably have less than a million subscribers.

Well if the Fusion idea happens, Nintendo will have to create more streams of revenue. Its easy to forecast something like a Nintendo network subscription service. Subscribers can get exclusive content,. discounted games & DLC, also free games to play every month (like XBL gold).

Nintendo needs this badly, as a fan I wouldn't be against it.

Maybe that is why they are stopping Club Nintendo...
To bring in Wii U Plus!
