PS3 was never selling that badly, just underperforming by expectations

PS3 was always seen as desirable hardware

PS3 never had a lack of software.

The Wii U is fundementally unattractive from a hardware perspective. Even if suddenly it got all of the 3rd party software in the world, no one/very few would want to play Witcher 3 or FFXV on that hardware versus the PS4 or even X1. The only realistic thing Nintendo can do at this point is push it as secondary console and unless you have an amazing gimmick, very few people will put down another $250 just to play a few exclusives (Mario kart, Smah Bros, Zelda). Hence why a Nintendo system with no 3rd party support or successful gimmick will only ever sell 20m

A tiny bit snippy, but very well said. I hope Nintendo can turn things around somewhat for the Wii-U, but It may end up being their worst selling home console ever. Epecially notable because of how big the industry is now. The Vita is not doing well either, but the handheld market seems to be collapsing befere our eyes. Even the dominate handheld is seeing shrinking sales compared to it's predecessor. Home consoles are as big a market as ever.

PS3 never did a turnaround. It failed, no profits, huge losses.

On the other hand, Nintendo has lost about $1.2 billion like you say, but one of those years precedes the Wii U. That's on the 3DS and its major price cut not too long after it had launched. Nintendo also erected a new building in Kyoto during that timespan which factors into their balance sheet, so the losses that the 3DS and Wii U accumulated actually aren't as big as it seems at a first glance. Nintendo didn't aggressively cut the price of the Wii U, so the road back to overall profitability for the system isn't that long; but given how low its hardware sales are and will be, Nintendo won't make much from it.

Buildings and such are a capital expense and not counted in operating income/loss.

In terms of capital expenses and gains, Nintendo has been profitable in this time, in other words their interest on their money and other investments, exchange rates, etc. has contributed to earnings.

It's their business "operations" (3DS, Wii U, merchandise, etc. development & sales) which has been lossy in this time, and this at the same time that Wii and DS were still contributing to sales as well.

''PS3 received one crap 3rd party port after another, most of which ran better on their competitor's console, leading a lot of people to believe the 360 was the better choice to play 3rd party games. Nintendo faced similar issues with 3rd parties where they got lesser ports in the beginning and eventually those dried up as well."

The PS3's 3rd party games improved, almost to the point of parity, and a handful even ran better on the PS3. Also as the wording of your post seems to imply, (even though I doubt you meant it that way), the PS3's 3rd games support was always, always superior to the Wii-U, and never "dried up" either. So yeah, 3rd party support is one reason. Perhaps the biggest one.

Yep, Bioshock Infinite, GTAV and Tomb Raider Reborn were better on PS3, as an example, and basicly parity on all the other multiplatform games after 2011, and yes, others were better on 360.

it could be more like 3DS, but wii U needed a 30% price cut like 3DS.
But is too late.
If they sold wii U for 200$ in the 2013 holidays, i think it could realy have turned arround.
but wii U is expnsive to produce, so there is no way.

It went from losing several billion a year to making a modest profit, and fixed the damage its launch had done to the brand. It may still have been an overall financial failure, but it ended on a much higher note than it started. It "turned things around" :p

Regardless, it appears the OT is talking about sales. Though the PS3 never really did a turnaround there (at least not in the traditional sense). It just had an incredibly long sales curve, likely because of its starting price.

Ps3 didn't had the same problems that WiiU has.

PS3 biggest problem was price.Once Sony started to make price cuts, the consoles started to sell better.Plus,PS3 never sold as bad as WiiU.

WiiU biggest problem is the lack of third party games. And even if third parties started to release their games on WiiU,the demographic probably wouldn't be there to buy. It's a snow ball effect.

Because Wii U is just not that of a desirable product for many. Think about it: the graphics aren't on the level of PS4/Xbone and the multiplats were comparable to PS360, no one wanted a machine that basically put out the same graphics in the same resolution(see all the ports like ac, mass effect, batman etc) as the console they had for years. The age of gimmicks are done, Kinect almost sank the Xbone. PS4 is doing so good by being just a game machine with awesome graphics. People just want VIDEOGAMES, they dont want TV/sports/revolution/whatever, they're comfortable with what the machines have been doing for nearly 40 years.

PS3 was an attractive product but it just cost too much, they also needed PS3 to win for Bluray.

Sony's first problem was the price but later on they fix it, looking besides that, the PS3 was and still the most powerful console on its generation, it had games from all genre instead of focusing in FPS's and online only games like most 360 games did, and as always Sony PS3 once again break the barrier in what videogames can achieve from gameplay to story.

Now moving to the WiiU, their internal corporate structure are just a bunch of arrogant fanboys that doesn't want to move forward, just look last years it was only about Mario here and Mario there oh an Pokemons, is incredible how many people praises Mario Kart and Smashbros like it was the best thing in the whole universe, well guess what!, thats why is Nintendo is failling, Nintendo's fanbase instead of asking for original/new things they are just comfortable by receiving barely new games, they just fine with Marios and Luigis, putting aside the Mario and Luigis, Nintendo screw up big time too by releasing a console 5 years later that was barely greater than the 360 or PS3 in terms of specs, also the most stupid thing was the controller, who the hell thought that moving your sight from the TV while gaming to see you controller was good a good idea?, sorry everyone that was plain retarded.

Also just to let you know PSP tried that(another screen) and it failed miserably, this was years before the Wii U.

Somehow it really makes mad what Nintendo is doing, I still have a small nice memory about Nintendo glory days when those days were about games (SNES)

How did Sony turn the PS3 around but Nintendo couldn't do the same with Wii U?

-By burning 5 billion dollars.

Nintendo can't do that.

Do people not realize than Nintendo not only is much smaller than Sony and Microsoft, they are also smaller than Activision, Ubisoft and EA? (in number of employees)
