Sony had a worldwide brand with PS, and they did not want to lose brand power. They were willing to make losses to keep the brand strong. This is in contrast to Nintendo and the Wii brand. It is likely Nintendo will drop the Wii brand and create yet another one.

PS3 was also potentially the strongest console of the 3 within its generation so developers could keep supporting it for years. Wii U is the weakest and by a long shot.

And of course Sony had strong developer relations from PS2 era and some of those may have slipped a bit, but they managed to keep most of it.

the xbone isnt much stronger...

No idea what you are talking about. I did not even mention Xbone.

If you mean Wii U vs Xbone, Xbone is almost equal to PS4 and both are a lot stronger then the Wii U.  In RAM Wii U only allows 1gb for games which is 1/6 of Xbone and PS4.

But I am thinking that is not what you meant so I will not explain further.

PS3 sold more in it's first year than the 360 did, you only have to look at the numbers on here to see that. Sales were slow in it's first few months globally because the platform didn't launch in Europe until the second half of March.
PS3 started out selling pretty well, then got a lot better because not only did Sony support it well with exclusives from the beginning, but they also had 3rd party support.

Sony lost their market share relative to what they had with PS2 because they were a year late to the party in most regions, well over a year late in Europe compared to Microsoft. Bluray was a big selling point for the console too.
Cost was too high for most, but despite that being the case it still sold incredibly well for the price it sold for.
Hardware performance was a big factor, as was the Playstation "coolness" brand factor that still remains too this day.

If Nintendo wants to compete on a similar level to Sony then they need to come out with a bigger variety of games that cater to the same audiences that PS4 does, that's basically everything a gamer within that market could want, be realistic games, hardcore experience, casual, inbetween and some more niche quirky titles, hell Sony even caters to the platform nostalgia audiences, now they're cool again supporting great indie games that will feed the future gaming audience.

As to why Nintendo can't get the market share back onto a Nintendo console platform.
With Wii U it's hardware performance is lacking, gamers want value too.
Nintendo missed out on the architecture shift to X86 and only went part of the way there with the level of resources they gave developers and they added an alien controller scheme that further took them away from what developers wanted in the way of a set of features.

Gamers needed to know that Nintendo had developed a new console, they confused the market or just flat out didn't spell it out that Nintendo had a new console and the games that could make people want to buy a Wii U, because they weren't available anywhere else besides on that platform took a bit too long to release.

Wii U can still sell a lot better, Nintendo needs to follow through on the promises of the games they've made, keep moving forward with those, maybe bundle a cheap HDD in the box, drop the price of the console to a reasonable level.
Wii U should basically be used by Nintendo to prep for Next Gen, show they can expand their repertoire of games, make more variety that perhaps targets the 3rd party audience of gamers, that will draw focus back from the developers of those games.
So long as Nintendo then goes to those developers to ask them what they want in the way of hardware for the 9th gen they could put themselves in a good position from the beginning. Maybe a new name for the company, or just drop the Nintendo branding into the background and focus on the name of console.

For Wii U now it has to be about creating a great library, on a console that is a great value package, that does games that are exclusive to that platform, that can interest gamers who own a PS4 or XB1, while having other games that maybe broaden gamers horizons.
Maybe Nintendo should create some new studios from Indie devs, made in the west and build those into AAA studios for the future, because talented game creators are most definitely the future of the industry.

I don't personally think the physical console is going anywhere, anytime soon. Cloud isn't taking over any time soon and if mobile phone or tablet/netbook processors get more powerful you can fit even more tech in a console case.

Firstly the PS3 situation was never quite so low as the WiiU's and as someone already said there is only so much you can turn around.

My answer's are as follows.

1. The parity between the PS3 and 360 meant that developers making games for the 360 had little to lose by also porting to the PS3, even when sales were poor. This kept third party support alive when it could be argued that it wasn't truly deserved (on the basis of sales, momentum, prospects and development ease)

2. RROD: served to somewhat stall the 360's momentum and cast the PS3 in a more positive light.

3. Price drop: the initial price was silly, it really needed to be cheaper and it happened.

4. Sony's first party started performing when they needed to.

All four together allowe the turnaround to occur. Nintendo have been addressing 4 but have much less incentive and room to move on 3. 1 and 2 were happy accidents so can't really be replicated.

the xbone is in the middle between ps4 and wiiu. its not allost equal to the ps4. games on the xbone dont look much better than on the wii u, both are subhd and without costly effects.

XBOne is not almost equal to the PS4.... Unless 50% more power is "almost" but that is beside the point. Ram does not equal power.  2GBs of GDDR5 ram would DESTROY 8 GBs of DDR3 ram in gaming performance. I am not sure what type of ram the Wii U uses but do not compare rams like they are all the same. The DDR3 ram in the XBOne is garbage, it is the small super fast ram in the XBOne (and 360) that make them good for gaming.

Thread

Nintendo and Sony are both doing fine, Sony has made profits off of Playstation for a while and Nintendo is making profits as well. I do think the Wii U is overall a failed concept (a fun failed concept) but I do think they would have been much better off cutting the tablet and sticking to Wiimotes. I prefer the Pro Controller over the Wiipad and I think most people feel that way

By burning money.

Despite the huge discrepancy in lifetime sales of hardware and software, the Wii U will have generated more profits for Nintendo than the PS3 for Sony.

PS3 burned most of its money before 2009, which is the year when Slim launched and the things turend around for the system, so they didnt save it by burning money, since most of it was alreadly burned by the time PS3 was saved.

They saved it by releasing a good amount of exclusvies after each year starting with UC2 while Nintendo and MS didnt do pretty much anything after 2010

Nintendo's problem is marketing.

Smart arses can act like it's third party support or the system's power or whatever, but I've always maintained that the Wii U's only problem was marketing.

The Wii sold more than the PS3 and 360 did, despite not supporting HD, having no annoying social apps, laggy online, and nowhere near the power that both the PS3 and 360 had. Thanks to marketing. Unlike the PS3 and 360, that were mainly aimed at young men, the Wii targeted all audiences, every demographic, to the point where there were even oldies in retirement homes playing them. It was everywhere.

First time I saw the Wii U I thought it was a $300 Wii add-on to go with the rest, and I'm sure most casual players and parents thought the same. The gamepad was the only thing shown at times, and the actual console was sat behind it. Like they were milking the Wii's name and success.

The average consumers buys more third party than anything else. It wasnt marketing.

It

People the Xbone is dead. The fact that you morons ignore M$ using their infinite amount of money to buy their way to surpass Nintendo is sad. And what's even sadder is how you trolls are going around protecting M$ by saying, "Oh Nintendo release Smash Bros. for the 3DS which is why Smash Bros. Wii U *ignores M$ infinite amount of money*"

Don't get me wrong, I love M$ but they're a shitty company that has always been shit.
