You're trying to tell me no Playstation has ever tried to appeal to the casual market? Please.

Sony tried very hard to do this with all of their consoles. PS1 was probably their most gamer-focused attempt, but even that was marketed to attract casual consumers with flashy 3D graphics and the use of CDs because they were a new technology at the time. The PS2 was primarily a DVD player in many homes, mostly because it was the cheapest DVD player you could buy. It was a wonderful game console, but it did attract the casual market, and that's why it's the best selling console ever. The PS3 tried to emulate that with its BluRay technology, but it wasn't as successful because it was so expensive - something the PS2 wasn't. Now, the PS4 is appealing to a different crowd - the casual gamer. The gamer that only knows about games because of commercials and buys based on hype. The gamer that typically only has games like COD or Destiny or Assassin's Creed, and buys things because they are "cool"; that's who Sony is appealing to.

I'm not even saying this is a bad thing or that Sony is wrong for doing this. Nintendo has done it plenty of times. Nintendo casualized the gaming market with the NES and Super Mario Bros., and again with the SNES (though to a lesser extent). They kinda strayed away from it with the N64 and GameCube, but the Wii and DS were very much targeted for casuals with their cheap price points and gimmicks that were very innovative and stuck with the general public. Casual is a very broad term and has really shifted meanings throughout the years. It's not just your mom and grandma who saw Wii Sports and instantly bought a Wii.

I guess PS4 just made gaming "cool" again, just like in the PS2 era. And Europe has over twice the population of United States.

PS4 is also doing pretty well in North America. Actually it was dominating Xbone until MS dropped the price (again).

Japan seems to be the only place where it hasn't made a commercial breakthrough.

Basically Sony got the price right and didn't include peripherals people didn't want. Then to top it off, it got all the 3rd party games people wanted to buy. (there is no great exclusives on MS or Sony)

Kinda makes you wonder if Nintendo had went with just the wiimote plus the pro controller and a beefier system, close to xbox one levels, at a $350 price point if it would have done significantly better considering Nintendo also has first party titles.

We'll never know if Nintendo could have gotten 3rd parties even at a higher power level and/or if the self-proclaimed core gamer could over come the brand image of Nintendo... but I'd buy it day one just like I did the current Wii U.

Wii U doesn't share much of the multiplatform games with the other two, so making a comparison only by exclusives is a bad one, as the lineup for PS4 and XBOne is much better than the article suggested. If you want to play the multiplatform games on PS4 and XBOne, you are going to get at least one of them, and people seem to be choosing PS4 (which is no wonder).

As is the case with Wii U, the sales aren't going to get better until Nintendo actually wants to sell games to customers.

What would casuals do with 3D graphics? And DVDs were cheaper than the PS2 within a year of its launch.

The reality PS systems have always been focused on the core gamers. It's ok if you want to believe otherwise but my guess is that you're trying to convince yourself that Nintendo isn't the only one that abandoned its core fanbase.

Actually I don´t, when I think on the best games of every generation PS is almost always missing the biggest masterpieces

The greatest games of Psone era? Ocarina Of Time, Goldeneye and Mario 64, did ps have some¿?then it don´t have THE BEST games of its generation

Had ps2: Halo, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, Ninja Gaiden, F-Zero, Twilight Princess, Mario Sunshine,Smash Bros Melee, etc? Oh no, so it doesn´t have THE BEST games of it´s generation.

And ps3 had Tlou ... but has ps3 Super Mario Galaxy (best rated game ever after OoT), or Alan Wake, Left 4 Dead, Gears of Wars 1,2 and 3, Halo 3,  Fable II, etc et etc Than it doesn´t have the BEST GAMES of his generation. 

So that´s YOUR opinion, Ps always have more games, but the bests? Not for me. 

And in this generation Ps4 is losing BY FAR in terms of quality,  is not even close to the quality of Wii U line-Up and by now One has so much better exclusives, and in 2015 ps4 is not going to have Xenoblade or Zelda U or Splatoon or Tomb Raider or Star Fox or Quantum Break. Bloodborne looks fine, but The Order?? Omg looks like crap, you´ll see. And there´s something more interesting for ps4 on 2015..... Street Fighter V? Not very exciting .... oh yeah Uncharted 4 tomb raider edition, yeah we´ll see if is not the same over and over. And Nothing more, that´s all the great exclusives that is going to have, oh but is going to have witcher 3, yeah.... like PC and One... So no, Ps4 is not going to have the best games of this generation, and you will see it ;)

Nintendo's weaker console, attached Gamepad which people most people don't see the appeal of, poor marketing / naming and weak launch lineup basically made it a non-issue in the competition with the PS4.

Microsoft aggressively pursued the digital, DRM, always online and Kinect stuff with the Xbox One announcement, and recieved big backlash for it. My guess is Sony would have been happy enough to go that way (minus Kinect) as well if gamers had looked like they would accept it at this point, but they didn't, so really all Sony had to do was show off the PS4 and keep their mouth shut about all that other stuff. Thus a meme was born: PS4 >> Xbone. It didn't really matter that Microsoft later backtracked on some of the digital only and always online stuff, the damage was done. And when the story at launch was that the PS4 could perhaps pack in a couple more pixels for 100$ less, while the more expensive Xbox got you a Kinect, both consoles were pretty successful but the launch sales rightfully went the way of the PS4.

After that, the PS4 had the memetic superiority from the initial announcement and more momentum, more friend power from higher launch sales, and those things snowball to keep giving higher sales. Xbox One eventually made itself more competitive by unbundling Kinect to lower the price, providing really cheap bundles for the holiday and arguably a slightly better exclusive lineup (PS4 really didn't set itself apart from the other consoles with its exclusive this year), but the PS4 was already well ahead in sales and word of mouth. And while I think the narrative is somewhat true that the PS4 won this year by a mile despite not really doing anything better in terms of game lineup, it looks like next year it has a great year for exclusives (though I'm personally not really interested in any of them), allowing it to continue its dominance.

The pool of informed gamers looking at all the consoles might have the majority prefer the PS4, but I think that it's among less informed people that the preference for it is even higher. All it takes is a few buzzwords and scraps of info to get out there and then perhaps be exaggerated and the Xbox One (and even more so the Wii U) are dead in the water compared to the PS4. I think so many people's thoughts on why the PS4 is better go back to that initial announcement hype and the fact that on power / graphics comparisons, the PS4 bars go a little bit higher on the bar chart (and the Wii U's bars, if it even makes the chart, barely register). It doesn't matter that much that a lot of the differences or disadvantages from the Xbox One announcement no longer hold true, or that the graphical disparity is not that great (or that the "not troo next gen" Wii U has the best recieved exclusives at this point). The perception is out there in the mainstream, and it allowed the PS4 to kill the competition even before it got out its big exclusive games.

It's one thing to argue against PS4, but to argue that the PS1 and PS2 didn't have the best games in their generation just seems insane. Both had an unprecendented amount of quality and quantity of great games that appealed to multiple markets.

But the best library is determined by who had the three most highly rated games, didn't you know that, Outlaw?  All the other games don't matter.  

Yeah, is true, very good games, but for me is missing the best ones, and ps4 doesn´t have the best games at all and doesn´t seem like is going to have it by now.
