Forums - Sony - Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

Everyone here realizes that PS4 might not be overtracked on VGC, right? When Sony announced that they had shipped 13.5M units, they did so FOR the end of September (3rd quarter end) AT the end of October. This means that there was over a month lag in their shipped announcement, a number they can accurately track. Unless Sony has some super sell through tracking method that is up to the day, this announcement is most likely also subject to the same lag.

The official announcement specifies that this is sales to consumer as well as the timeframe which is until January 4th so it does seem that VGC is overtracked on PS4.

That is the logical conclusion.

Actually the date was for software sales and not hardware during the annoucnement.  Journalism integrity at its finest is what we are dealing with.   Though now that the information has changed on the official site, it might be legetimate for both.

So they know one day before how many they sold through in the world? Didn't know they could track this fast. NPD is kind of pointless then.

Exactly. Sony says sold through, everyone jumps in and says that means it's ps4 systems sitting in someone's livingroom... ok. Sold through... to stores. A ps4 on a store shelf is still a sold system, for them. 18.5 million shipped. Simple.

Wow, such denial it's unbelievable:

"Number of retail sales to consumers is estimated by SCEI. PS4 sales data in Japan collected 2/22/2014 – 1/4/2015. PS4 sales data in North America collected 11/15/2013 – 1/3/2015, in Europe and Latin America collected 11/29/2013 – 1/3/2015, and in Asia collected 12/17/2013 – 1/4/2015.

The reference used for the 18.5 million sales figure is below:

1"Number of retail sales to consumers is estimated by SCEI. PS4 sales data in Japan collected 2/22/2014 – 1/4/2015. PS4 sales data in North America collected 11/15/2013 – 1/3/2015, in Europe and Latin America collected 11/29/2013 – 1/3/2015, and in Asia collected 12/17/2013 – 1/4/2015."

seems pretty cut and dry to me.  You're saying that this is an estimate of software sales?

I'm saying when it was originally announced the date was worded in a way that it only applied to software sales.  Hense why the story itself is so conflicted.  Then I believe Jeff said that he confirmed the date included hardware.  Now it's on an official site.  The whole thing is strange.

My point is simple: I'm pretty sure that someone didn't run up to Kaz and say, "Here are today's final numbers from all of our retailers." Typically, there is a lag in the delivery of these numbers, because of your accounting and marketing departments. For argument's sake, if you were a public company like Sony, are you going to announce older, verified numbers that will match or be beaten by quarterly reports or will you throw out a high end, nearly impossible to verify number out there? Corporations almost always default to the former, to protect themselves from beatings on the market, due to missing predictions. I'm not saying that you are wrong, but it seems far more likely that a financially troubled company like Sony would have the same lag in these numbers, in order to protect their valuation. As always, time will tell.

Yeah, it seems too risky to throw out day-of estimates for the public to dissect.

I agree with this. It can only be an estimate. It's an approximation but it's as close as you could get imo. No way every retailers in the world send Sony their numbers and Sony compiles them for one day so they could announce numbers the next day.

Does these news mean PS4 is down YOY when comparing the same timeframe (middle of november through end of year)? Last year, between november 15th and december 28th, they sold 4.2 million. I know this generation had an historically massive launch, but still.

Launch window hype would make it hard to pass, but since ps4 sold 4.1M from november 23rd to January 4th then they outsold first year by some 300-500k.

Yes, you are right about that, I was for some reason thinking november 13th :).

Even so the growth isn't much, but since numbers last year were incredible that growth in itself is good news. By vgc numbers have x1 grow yoy in this period? I haven't looked.

The hell? Pretty weird that it sold that little during the holidays.

6.5M is definitely "that little"
