A milked franchise means its getting worse or phoned in...

hmm... i didnt knew that, i thought it just meant doing sequels and sequels to very "famous" games.

i guess those "famous" games could sell well regardless of their quality (and hence the milking part), but then again MGS is a "milked" franchise (or at least thats what i heard people saying) but it never bothered me since the games were so good.

Yeah, many people just throw the word around for any popular franchise...

If MS/Sony were in the console business 25 years ago u could say the same thing about them.

So they haven't milked any franchises for 25 years but that's kinda hard when u haven't been in the console business that long. Microsoft and Sony sure don't mind milking a franchise for 15 years though. Assuming MS/Sony are still making consoles 10 years from now, I'm sure we will still see these franchises getting milked.

Games like Metroid have been around since 1986 and has about the same amount of releases. Mario Kart (1992) and Smash Bros (1999) are some of Nintendo's biggest franchises and only have 8 & 5 installements. Nintendo also gives many franchises long stretches between releases, Kid Icarus went 21 years without a release, Pikmin 3 came 9 years after 2, Luigi's Mansion went 12 without a sequel. Yes, Mario as a character & Pokémon are very milked and have a shit load of spinoffs but for the most part other companies milk their franchises just as much as Nintendo.

Shouldn't you be trying harder?  You really haven't backked what you've said except "pokemon is milked. stop saying it's not, other people"

Nintendo has already, to this date, been around in gaming longer than Microsoft or Sony will in the future for gaming.

1 reason they unfortunately won't

They are catering to ever decreasing number of core fans that value their first party above Sony's first party and third party. Their games are highly profitable because they never lower the price because they only come out with one in each major franchise per gen BUT that's not enough to appeal to the wider audience. At the end of the day you can't ignore trends and the retention on Nintendo systems from gen to gen just keeps going down for their audience. 60 to 40 to 30 to 20 to hopefully maybe 15m for WiiU (ignoring the casual appealing Wii which is safe to say we won't see that again).

Sony has a massive audience that will buy it up every gen and they have a ton of big releases almost throughout the year. Nintendo you wait for those 1 or 2 gems that just aren't enough to sell systems anymore to the wider audience.

The more that Nintendo fans from the 90s grow up the less that core group will buy. Sure some will get it for their kids but it's not enough to make up for the big number that just stop buying systems or Nintendo systems at least. I've seen it first hand to go along with these overall numbers. 6 different college roommates used to have N64s or even Gamecubes and they just don't wanna spend money on Nintendo anymore. They're happy with an occasional emulator romp or something but they're sure as hell not buying a WiiU.

Considering that Nintendo already has been around longer then Sony and Microsoft combined they where founded in 1889 after all its pretty easy to predict that they will last the longest.

Because they know how to milk a franchise without destroying it. They don't milk it completely dry as quickly as possible and then discard it, and they don't just repeat the exact same formula over and over again until people become bored with it.

And the fans are loyal for a reason.

Not to mention that they been around longer before gaming since the company was founded in 1889 there are very few main stream brands that have been around longer.
