It could break even with 2014 due to the Splatoon/Smash Wii U bundle for $250.

2014 probably will be Wii U's best year, although there's a possibility that honour could go to 2016 as well. For one, I'm still not convinced that we'll be seeing the Wii U's successor until at least 2017 and so long as that's true, it won't be around to take sales away from Wii U. There's Zelda to think about - a game that can definitely move a few consoles. We don't know what else might be coming next year, either, since Nintendo have a tendency to not announce games until they're very close to completion.

Plus the Wii U still hasn't had an official price drop. If Nintendo does that, even by $50 or something, it'll probably put a pretty big spike in sales for a few weeks (I remember when the GameCube had a major price drop, for a couple of weeks it was actually outselling the PS2).

A price cut would do it but Nintendo wants more money

I'd imagine at least some components of the console are cheaper now than they were in 2012, so they could probably do at least a small price cut without taking a loss on the console.

2015 is crawling closer and closer, but at that speed it will get tough to reach last year's numbers. Then again last year's Smash push was strongly diminshed by the 3DS version, overall sales in Japan where worse than this year and the console has a higher baseline than it had last year. Plus there's Ginei Ibun Roku #FE looming for the last week, which might just be enough to get the console over the edge if 2015 is not too far behind...

New numbers up. 2015 is putting a good fight!!

I haven't been closely tracking this lately, but I remember about a month ago Wii U was confirmed overtracked on VGC. Nintendo announced they shipped like 10.5M as of September 30 I think, which meant VGC numbers had to be off. There may have been some adjustments since then though.

Edit: Looked it up. 10.73M shipped as of September 30, so looks like Wii U is probably still overtracked here.

updated again.

Love the thread.
It seems Wii U needs to sell 1 547 796 more units this year to equal last year. That's an average of 257 966 per week. I just can't see it happening. Maybe if Starfox had of dropped about now as originally planned (and it was awesome) they might have had a chance but there simply isn't the software to drive those numbers IMO.

Slightly below last year, but not too shabby yet.

Next 3 weeks will be interesting, with Mario Tennis/AC Amiibo Festival, then Black Friday, then Xenoblade Chronicles X release

Which week was the Smash Wii U release again last year?

Week 47 I believe. A lot of people held out on getting a Wii U till Black Friday, which I believe was week 48.

Last year didn't have a good bundle, but definitely a good game (smash)

This year we have a better bundle (Smash and Splatoon Wii U bundle for $250) but the "good game" doesn't hit until Dec 4th.

Im not certain on how well this year will do, but next year will be the best year probably. I mean it already has that amazing lineup of games and next year, Star Fox, Pokken, SMT X FE, Twilight Princess HD and Zelda U is already one of the best lineups. They are all pretty much system sellers too. So all those coupled with what the Wii U already has to offer, I bet 2015 won't beat 2014 (not a huge gap though) but 2016 will be the Wii U's best year.

You might be right but with almost zero 3rd party releases for Wii U on the horizon and the NX looming I think 2016 might be less again....
