It will be funny if an Ubisoft game works day one and people claim witch craft though. |
Yes, but that's the problem, it's not really standard. That and their games are usually good and fun.

Thats because that is what it means. Primarily making games that capture the hearts and imagination of children and keep the inner child of adults alive. Miyamoto himself until the day he dies will have an inner child, which is why he is so determined to carry out that goal.
Imo it's just the unique charm a lot of their games have. No matter what series a Nintendo game just feels like a Nintendo game Mario, Zelda, metroid, fire emblem, Kirby they all have a similar design and personality. It's kind of hard to explain but a lot of devs are like this like you can just tell when you're playing a platinum game or an atlus game and Nintendo is no different
There certainly used to be a lot more magic in Nintendo than there is now. Nintendo Power and World of Nintendo were two examples of things that really added to the "Nintendo magic" back in the day. It also helped that everything was coming from Japan which as a kid seemed like the future.
Reggie Fils-Aime has done such a poor job of building some of the magic and hype around Wii U. I can't imagine what's keeping him employed at this point. I watched the last Nintendo Direct event and it was terrible and lifeless. Watch an Apple event or read Console Wars NOA and learn how to sell products again. The Wii U deserves a lot more success than 8.2m units sold based on the quality of games.

I don't know about "magic" but I think Nintendo's singularity has everything to do with the way its studios design software. Because Nintendo and its affiliates focus on stability, performance, and the fundamentals of game design, their games are usually 1) fun to play, 2) fun to play for a long time, and 3) free of bugs and other technical problems.
Other studios, of course, achieve the same level of excellence in game design, but none have done it consistently for 30 years.

Go back to when you were a child. What was it about Nintendo that captured your attention?
It's a level of fun, creativity, and overall charm that you just don't see in other games. A lot of people are shrugging it off as nothing but a fad word, but I believe in it fully. There's just a level of quality and polish and childlike joy that Nintendo basically invented.
That said, these days the Nintendo magic has left Nintendo and now rests with many of the indie developers that grew up with that magic. Current Nintendo just doesn't have it anymore.
