Give me one good reason Sony and Microsoft shouldn't go third party?

Because Sony is destroying the market and MS doesn't really have the IPs for it (aside from Halo, Gears and Forza)

So? Nintendo did great last time and Sony lost a lot of money then. A lot can change over a generation.

The Wii was lightning in a bottle, I don't think it can be repeated.

Keeping the lightning is wat counts. Sony and Microsoft can F* it up just as quickly. And Nintendo is still profitable, they'll stick around. And their online is free ^^

Huh? What are you disagreeing with?

That first sentence is why this whole argument is stupid and this thread should be locked. This isn't socialism, and Nintendo doesn't owe it to you or anyone to go third party and "benefit the entire industry." If that were the case, Sony should have went third party after two to three years of being down in the dumps with the PS3.

Also, Nintendo is no longer losing money on the WIi U. If you're saying it should go 3P based on that, then again, Sony should have gone third party after the PS3 and MS should have gone third party from... the very beginning, because its Xbox brand hasn't made it a penny, ever.

I'm not labeling you a Nintendo hater, by the way. I just think you should spend more than five seconds meditating on that thought that comes to your head before making a thread on it.

I never said Nintendo owes anyone... and Sony going 3rd party in the early PS3 days would have been a terrible idea because they didn't have a great lineup of IPs back then. Personally I see the future as one unified console with everyone developing on it. Everyone will just make games. But I think Nintendo should be the first to drop out because they can't compete in the space anymore.

You said to give you a reaosn Nintendo shouldn't go third party, then stated your reasons why it should, with the first sentence being one of them. That's implying that Nintendo should stop thinking of its own firm and do what you personally think is best for everyone else. That's like saying a wealthy old tycoon should drop his investments and go get a job as a school counselor  because it would benefit the community. That's reasoning from La La Land.

Well by that logic then nobody should ever give advice again.

Because they both have successful next gen consoles.

You do realise that "sells a lot" isn't actually the same as "successful", right?

Wait, you probably don't, so I'd better explain it to you like you're a child. You see it's successful if it makes money. Nintendo is currently making money. It will be making more money in the near future. And before you mention recent losses (before the most recent few months), I'll point out that despite the PS4 selling a lot, Sony's game division lost $78 million last financial year. And Microsoft appears to be losing money on the Xbox One (although it's harder to determine with confidence, due to the structure of the company).

Simply put, if you don't comprehend that sales are different from success for a business, then you might want to study up on elementary business principles.

Reasons Nintendo shouldn't go third party:

1. Sega's third party decline.

2. Third parties often struggle and go through hard times. People make a fuss when Nintendo goes in the red but financially they've been very stable compared to the third party competition. Nintendo are where they are because of their business model. They shouldn't throw it all away and become one of the crowd on a knee jerk reaction.

3. As part of the crowd they'd have to compete with the competition in terms of marketing. Nintendo spends a fraction on marketing for their games as big third parties do. Suddenly the cost of making a game will dramatically increase when factoring the increased cost of promotion.

4. Love them or hate them Nintendo hardware pushes in a different direction and that variety enriches the gaming landscape.

5. Nintendo consoles and the overall tone of the games appeal to a different kind of audience than the competition. Yes, you can get family friendly games of a Playstation but even with Nintendo's third party support it's not the systems focus. You risk losing an audience that might otherwise not get into non-smartphone/tablet gaming.

6. I'd be a PC only gamer. Nintendo is the only company that offers enough contrast to make me want a console.

Their games wouldn't sell any better than they do now.

People choose to ignore Nintendo in favor of other publisher's games for their own reasons. Even if a Nintendo game were available to them, they wouldn't care to buy it for their PS4 or X1

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

last week the sold more than 600,000 units of hardware.

Why not go 3rd party in terms of handhelds? make games for the 3ds it's clearly the place to put their handheld games for profits? Why not just both agree that 1 system is better and just make games for that? why have people compete between ps4 or X1 just shake hands and then everyone wins right? Give me one good reason why they don't as a person who buys games I don't see why the world shouldn't be a way that would make it easier for me to buy all the games on 1 system since I matter so much!!

Is XB1 pulling a profit?  Has the XBox Division been profitable overall for Microsoft?

What is success?

If Nintendo drops the Wii U to $10 and it sells 50million consoles next year but loses huge amounts of money, will that make them a success?

It's better for the industry if Nintendo keeps making their on hardware, and I'll give you THE best reason ever:

If Nintendo goes 3rd party, no one else will be able to sell any more games! The industry would crash! Don't believe me? Why do you think only Nintendo games sell on Nintendo consoles? Because they are so much more superior. Imagine if Activision and EA had to compete with Nintendo on EVERY hardware. Disaster would follow! Nintendo would dominate! Not even Sony's or MSs 1st party games would sell any more. Both companies would stop making consoles, because they wouldn't make enough money from them, which would force Nintendo to going BACK to make consoles. Thus Nintendo would be the ONLY console maker left in business.

Do you see NOW why Nintendo must never be allowed to go 3rd party?

^This, once gamers get a taste for well made games they won't want to come back.
