Buying Sony at this point would be the worst thing any company could do...

I wanted to vote "Yes, it's possible", but the polls choices were too limited so I had to go with "Yes, no doubt about it.".

No doubt that Nintendo is my console of choice, always has been and most likely always will be. But my biggest concern with them is their strategy of being "different" from their competition.

Yes it worked really well with Wii, and I believe that they could easily have sold 50+ million consoles if they just released Wii 2, with new hardware but the same old machine. Released it first, a year or so before Sony/MS and put a $250 pricetag on it.

Tried to make the controllers better, improve or try out some new technology for motion controller and use that in their advertisement.

In my opinion if you don't have the hype around your product like Apple has with iPhone, Sony has with PS4 now and Nintendo had with Wii, is that you must be first on the market, have a really sweet pricetag, sign some great deals with a few third party devs and also put some of your best franchises out at the start.

If Nintendo really wanted to take back the core gamers and still keep the casuals the most simple strategy is what I have presented above.

Release Nintendo "Next" early(but not too early), put good hardware into the console so that it will be up to date(but doesn't have to be to the extreme), set an attractive price tag on the console and market it for gamers. And by my own wish, go back to use "standard/classic" controllers.

If they would have a one year head start, have a "normal" console and controller, attractive price and release-titles such as CoD, Battlefield, Zelda, Mario, Fifa, Madden, NBA, NHL and some other random games it would(should!) move consoles. If not, at least not Nintendo is to blame.

But I know that Nintendo won't go this path, I think they have even made some statement about "merging" their handheld and stationary console, in some way or the other, so of course the above suggestion by me won't happen.

If this handheld and stationary one-in-one will be successful or not I don't know. Most likely it will be more successful in Japan/Asia than Europe/NA. But if it can be used, with ease, as either or then I suppose it could be successful if people in general would think of it as the next DS.

The worst scenario however would be if this would cripple Nintendo's handheld sales, as they are by default the market leader.

I really don't want to think of the future of Nintendo, I'm more scared than curious to be completely honest. I never know what to expect of them.

As long as they deliver me new Zelda games I'm fine however.

I'd rather they just make good games that become financially successful.

wii u problems;

(no particular order);

1. Poor controller with no analogue triggers
2. very weak performance
3. lack of third party games
4. legacy of following a very disappointing console
5. well over-priced for spec
6. childish image
7. non-child friendly controller
8. Expensive games (for performance)
9. Far superior consoles are only marginally more expensive.
10. Similar performance consoles with far superior software support are cheaper
11. Limited functionality with regards media centre use
12. poor audio support so not compatible with a wide range of home cinema equipment. No optical out, dolby 5.1 etc.
13. Poor online infrastructure
14. Purchased content tied to console not user.
15. Has the stench of failure about it.
16. Many people don't actually realise its a different console to the wii such has been Nintendo's useless marketing.
17. Undesirable product.
18. Nintendo charges high prices for software even back-catalogue retro games.
19. It doesn't really fit into the marketplace well.
20. Nintendo killed the wii to push wii u when the wii still had consumer demand and probably would have continued to sell well at a lower price

The good;

1. Nintendo games
2. Plays wii games too.
3. Reliable
4. Robust
5. Uses very little power.

Nintendo are still making good money from handhelds but I don't think they are willing to invest in a proper home game console nowadays. So I feel Nintendo will create a handheld console that also has an easy TV connection.

I so hope to be wrong though and hear that Nintendo are working on something to beat the ps4 in performance that will hit the market in the next two years. Realistically they have to do this if they want to stay in the home console business.

1) This reads like an ill-disguised attempt at trolling the Wii U while attempting to look "neutral" about it. Next time i see this you're falling out for a while

2) Why in the hell would it be a good idea to make a PS4+ in two years, when everyone will still be happy with their PS4, it'll have moved down in price and still have a healthy environment of games? It's like the calls to make "Wii HD" in 2009 that Pachter was so insistent about, it would've just cut the legs out from everything they had while not giving them anything against the competition.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Only if they can change, but they're more stubborn than their game's price drops.

No that's a horrible idea, if they release a console in 2016 that is just moderately more powerful than PS4 with the intention of winning over 3rd parties, that just puts them in the exact same situation as Wii U. By holiday 2016, PS4/XB1 will be hitting their peak, have large install bases (probably 70-80 million or more combined), be at low mass market prices ($249-299), have 100's of games, large online communities, firm lockdown on the mainstream AAA audience.

3rd parties may release games for this system if it's cheap to port games over but that doesn't necessarily mean the games will sell well. Big selling games like Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Destiny, Watch Dogs, FIFA, Madden, etc already have large fanbases on PS4/XB1 and will continue to grow in the next 2 years. Releasing a PS4 level console 3 years late is no way to win over this type of audience.

If Nintendo wants to get back in the arms race and win over 3rd parties, they would have to release a PS5/XB4 level system but that is pretty much impossible to release in about 2 years. It would be a $399 powerful Nintendo console competing against $249-299 competitors. People who bought a PS4/XB1 from 2013-2016 aren't going to be ready to upgrade yet and people who want a home console from 2017 onward are likely to buy the cheaper alternatives with vastly larger library.

In either of these scenarios, it basically is the same situation as now, it becomes a console primarily to play Nintendo games. If Nintendo wants to release a PS5 level system, they would need to do it closer to when PS5 releases when people are actually ready to upgrade their hardware. Releasing a PS4 level system 3 years late won't work and releasing a PS5 level system 3 years early won't either.

Instead of spammy reaction GIFs, why not present something of substance?

First, under current market capitalization, Sony is in danger of a buyout. Sony's market cap is $20 billion right now, which is about 3x what Nintendo has in cash, though theoretically if Nintendo wanted to, they could over-leverage themselves and buy it out.

Secondly, Sony as a corporation is a hot mess right now. PlayStation and their life insurance division are all they have that's worth a damn, especially as Sony Pictures unravels now in the wake of the hack. Buying Sony would, indeed, be a terrible idea unless the buyer just wanted to liquidate everything except life insurance and the PS division, and that wouldn't be worth the asking price (especially as the market cap would rise as soon as it was clear somebody wanted to buy)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

dont see it happen, nintendo was never the platform of choice for third party. Even the wii was never really as sucessfull as the other 2, yeah it sold more units but not more games and services, espacially third party games. Nintendo could maybe succeed if their planed console for devolping countries becomes succefull in getting people who arent gamer into buying their consoles like they did with the wii.
