Nintendo, structured as it is now, would have to hit another bases-loaded home-run in terms of innovative hardware or stumble on a gimmick that goes viral. They cannot go head-to-head with Sony or Microsoft when it comes to the sheer number and diversity of experiences those platforms offer. As long as Nintendo markets to a niche audience, that won't change.

The people who run Nintendo now, the aging game developers who only care about making the kind of games they want to play, simply won't cut it if the company seriously wants to compete.

Of course, they don't necessarily have to go head-to-head against Sony and Microsoft, they just need to avoid another Wii U. The problem with going for hardware home-runs is that home-run hitters are more likely to strike-out entirely. I think Nintendo could do quite nicely with a simple, inexpensive machine that brings in a modest profit from day one. The Wii U is a weak machine with a price tag that's hard for people to justify, especially when they've been completely unable to sell the general public on the idea that the GamePad is a game-changer. Expensive gimmicks that fail to catch on are the retail equivalent of trying to swim with chains fastened to your ankles.

The only other option Nintendo really has is to invest a LOT of money, time, and energy into a comprehensive plan that will bring them to even footing with Sony and Microsoft. That means hiring industry leaders from all over the world and realizing that it's now a global market. I don't think the current regime is capable of that, to be honest.

Well. It can always happen. This gen didn't start well for Microsoft and Nintendo because they shot themselves on the foot but a lot of people clearly don't even want to believe that Sony can fuck up just like they did at any moment. They will probably get the lead this gen, but if gen 8 they pull a MS and try to begin a digital-only streaming service they will be pretty much done for since MS probably won't make the same mistake again. MS at least rectified those policies and puts a lot of work into the console (Monthly updates and such), but who knows what would Sony do in that case, maybe they would try to force it into people and destroy all they did with the PS brand all these years.

In any case, even if Sony or MS don't shoot themselves the foot, I think Nintendo obviously has a chance. They are producing lots of high quality games this gen for Wii U and 3DS, mostly for Wii U to compensate its flaws. IMO even if they don't sell very well, they are creating confidence among consumers, because they didn't just drop the new console and moved onto another one like Sega did (and also for some reason lots of people used to say they should do this, like seriously wtf) nor did they focus all their resources into 3DS just because that one did sell great, ignoring the Wii U (Yes PS Vita I'm looking at you), but rather supported it heavily and at least for me that makes me think that even if the 9th gen Nintendo console is also another fuck up, at least I'll be getting some crazy good games so I'll not hesitate to buy it at some point early in it's life.

Now seriously though I love how everyone always seem to ignore the 3DS when talking about Nintendo's situation in the market (Though in this thread it's obviously ok since the question is about home consoles). MS fans (Please note I said fan, not fanboy) might not care that much about handhelds but that's ok I guess since the company doesn't have one, but when it comes to many Sony users I find it annoying if they start bragging (Not on VGchartz but rather in many websites in general and even on real life) about PS4 and how good it is but then they completely ignore the PS Vita and its general lack of support from Sony. Ninty is dominating one of the two sides of this market, at least. About dominating both sides... Well,  MS doesn't even have a handheld and no company can really beat Nintendo on handhelds anyway. Pokemon alone is too big of a franchise as to be beaten by anyone. Combine Pokemon with Monster Hunter and a few other handheld-selling franchises and tada, you got a Nintendo handheld printing money.
