Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto: Next Mario Will Most Likely Be On Nintendo’s Next Console

Yeah Miyamoto is only saying that a new take on Mario probably won't happen on the Wii U, so my hopes of an open world evolution of say SM64, with the full Mushroom Kingdom and entire Mario world seamlessly integrated probably won't come to Wii U, but that doesn't mean Wii U can't get it's proper 3D Mario release.

It's highly doubtful that the Wii U will only have a 5 year lifespan, hell 6 years at minimum would be a good bet, so we probably won't hear anything about the next Nintendo console until E3 2017, so 8 years without a mainline Mario release on a Nintendo home console is what people are saying when they say that Wii U won't get a main 3D Mario title, which is a ridiculous notion.
Personally I can't class SM3DW as that big Mario release that Wii U deserves, it's a stop gap, essentially a port of the 3DS game, with some extra additions, not a proper 3D Mario game made to take advantage of the features of the Wii U like SM64 was for the N64, Sunshine was for Gamecube or Galaxy 1 & 2 were for the Wii.

Hell I wouldn't be shocked if we see another Zelda release after The Legend of Zelda U comes out, even N64 (Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask) and Gamecube (Twilight Princess and Wind Waker) had 2 mainline Zelda games.
Wii had a port of Twilight Princess and got Skyward Sword as it's mainline Zelda games.

I suspect we'll get an announcement of the next Mario at E3 2015, to release in 2016 or 2017, along with Metroid, maybe a Wave Race or F-Zero and some new IPs.

Like many others, I'm unhappy for the long haul that is 3D Mario drought, yet happy that the next console is slightly more likely to come in 2017.

More HD re-releases for WiiU should be coming as well.

I didn't see Miyamoto's quote in the OP or even in the news story that was linked to, so here it is:

AP: Mario has been busy on the Wii U with "Super Mario 3D World" last year and now "Mario Kart 8." Is he taking the next year off? What can we expect from that franchise in the future?

Miyamoto: Since we first created Mario, people have compared him to Mickey Mouse. I've always said Mickey Mouse evolved with each evolution in animation. You saw Mickey Mouse each step of the way. From early on, I wanted Mario to be that character in the digital world, so that with each digital evolution, he was there to usher in the next era. I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system, you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game.

He wasn't asked about his platformers specifically, and it wasn't what he was talking about in the reply ether.

"I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game"

Is a pretty specific comment. It's just not what some people want to hear. The next Nintendo hardware (whatever that is, handheld is probably overdue to 2016) will need to have a big Mario game very close to launch I think.

They can't have another bad launch and we saw how badly the 3DS did before Mario 3D Land.

Sounds fair. We are getting Mario Maker. So, am personally happy with Mario platfomers.

That and i have a sealed copy of Galaxy 2 sitting around. :)

and next E3 they will go announce a new mario game lol.

I think they are going to be remaking more Mario games instead of making new ones for the rest of the Wii U's life
