"I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game"
Is a pretty specific comment. It's just not what some people want to hear. The next Nintendo hardware (whatever that is, handheld is probably overdue to 2016) will need to have a big Mario game very close to launch I think.
They can't have another bad launch and we saw how badly the 3DS did before Mario 3D Land.
