Forums - Gaming - Game Launch Prices are a JOKE to the industry... Proof

Ubisoft is known for discounting games very quickly after launch.  Threads about this seem to pop up every year about them.

Exactly. Every single Ubisoft game gets price-slashed about a month after launch. Why anyone buys a Ubisoft game at launch that is not a collector's edition is baffling to me.

then why watch a movie if it will on the discount theaters after a month?
or dvd or blu ray in 15 mos?

why have sex now if you can have sex later....

why buy a book on launch if it will be on sale after 2 mos...

1) Because it will be discounted after a month. Patience is rewarded. Most movies are overhyped and not worth blockbuster prices anyway.

2) I don't have to pay for sex, so I can't relate to you on this one...

3) Exactly. Read something else for a couple of months and get it cheaper. Sometimes, the answer is in the question.

It certainly pays to wait now. Personally I bought Driveclub for the PS4 last week for the UK price of £24.99 which is almost 50% off the original RRP. And for the waiting, I now have a game that works as it should rather than paying nearly £50 a couple of months ago to beta test it. Same for Alien Isolation. Bought that last week as well for £25, again nearly 50% off and a few patches later the game is close to perfect.

There is literally no point now buying games on day one because it pays to wait it out both in price and in functionality of the final product.

That said, I don't think game prices are unfair at all.  They are a damn site cheaper these days than they used to be.  When I had an 8 bit console I was paying £30 for new games back then which equates to over £70 in todays money.

Typical 16 bit games from the likes of Megadrive and SNES bumped the price again to the £40 mark for new titles and that in todays money again is over £70.  So since the 16 bit days prices have in fact come down quite a fair way.

PREDICTIONS FOR END OF 2015: (Made Jan 1st 2015)

PS4 - 34M - XB1 - 21m - WII U -12M

Games have barely fluctuated in price despite inflation, staying around $40-$60. Adjusted for inflation, some games could would have been around 80 bucks. I consider it lucky that, despite the increasingly expensive costs to create the games themselves, the actual price haven't gone sky high to match the budgets.

1) Unity is a special case, and is far from the norm.

I'm pretty sure every AC has dropped considerably within 3 months of release.  I remember my brother getting Black Flag at launch and about 2 months later Best Buy had it for 19$.

Yeah but the example in the OP is 1 month old.  Also AC drop faster than most I have found.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

If you shop games for a few years you see trends.

Nintendo games rarely go down more than 50% at any point in their life and generally hold at 100% for a while after launch.

Niche Japanese games split 50/50 for me with some dropping quick to 30% of initial price while others hold at 100% or even go to 120% due to limited stock.

The easiest drops to predict are mid major and major western releases. I knew Shadow of Mordor was going to be 50% off within 3 months of release, and it was over the holiday sales. By early to mid next year you'll be able to get it for $15-20 range.

I learned this on the PS3 when I bought Assassin's Creed for $60, Assassin's Creed II for $30, Brotherhood for $20 and Revelations for $10. Given how fast the entries come out if you don't mind being one behind easily find last year installment for sub $20.

My average purchase price for a physical PS3 game was roughly $20-25, meanwhile on 3DS it has been $30-35. I expect PS4 to follow this trend in coming years. Just look at near launch titles now to see how many have dropped to $20-30 range.

Gaming today is much cheaper than 16 bit days when most games held at 100% and rarely dipped below 50% within a year of release.  I remember seeing Super Metriod so still $50 in 1996.  The PS1 started the push down in prices and reset expectations to get great games a year or two after launch for $20.

@OP why are you complaining about free market lol? If there is less demand retailers will sell for less. Its funny you dont hear these news stories about retail games getting cheaper in just few month but every time steam has a Sale.

This is why i dont support digital, we physical game collectors get a sale for every game in just 1 or 2 month. Congratulation for choosing the red pill

I saw Advanced Warfare on Steam last weekend, it was 25% off and the Multiplayer was free to play for everyone for that weekend as well. Pretty crazy!
