Forums - Sales - Wii U beaten by the Dreamcast - what now?

Nintendo should be a Sony 1st Party Developer.

I'd rather they stay independent.

Yep, as someone who helps put together product proposistions in a multimillion-pound company, that's exactly what I'm telling you. You're right, it's a different time, a time where the gaming community is larger than ever and thanks to the ever decreasing size of chips, expected product returns should be greater than ever. And yet the Wii U demonstrates that Nintendo are struggling to evolve with the changing market.

Well considering Nintendo's recent losses, clearly they are not making enough profit from the Wii U. The U will sell a minimum of 20 million units? How so? It's been out for 2 years and hasn't even hit 10 million units. When you combine that with console sales slowing down over time, there's literally no reason to think it'll sell 20 million lifetime. Also the long term damage backing a fading console will do will be catastrophic. If they keep supporting the Wii U for another 2 years, then by the time a successor comes out, Nintendo will not even be known by the majority of gamers. By supporting only the Wii U, they are effectively minimising their potential customer base by 10's of millions of customers.

The dreamcast has beaten the Wii U in terms of total life time sales launch to end of life.

Is this your crystal ball?

He won't listen, the OP is pretty much the non-graphics version of ninjablade, his presence on VGChartz has been pretty much dedicated to bashing Nintendo.

Ah, another one of the "show us on this doll where Nintendo touched you" crowd. I mean the OP, not you. :)

Pretty much but with a corporate-made empty idol as avatar*!

I agree with this^

I agree too & it's a way more likely scenario than the contrary seeing Sony financials, if they spin out the console business like they did for their TV division, I highly doubt they'd have the $$ to run things like they did for the last 20 years, Microsoft would price-war them to the ground in a blink!

Wii U makes profit. Nintendo is in fantastic shape financially. SEGA was losing money and nearly went out of business.

So what now? Nintendo sells Wii U as planned and keeps making profit. Even tho Wii U is selling less than XBO and PS4 it's in better shape. Sony posted it's 6th huge loss in 7 years. MS continues to dumb billions with little return. Funny thing is it's starting to look like PS and Xbox will become less of consoles and a brand of gaming services on devices. It's already starting with PSnow and Windows 10.

It would be strange, funny, and sad, if Nintendo were the last console-maker left. At this point, it looks like it might end up being the case. Nintendo is already a dinosaur of a company, and they might actually see a minor boost from those of us who prefer nostaligia and classic titles when M$ and Sony make the jump to streaming services.

I think real gamers will love to play laggy video-compressed games through streaming services! /s

On Nintendo being a dinosaur of a company, you more right than you think, Nintendo is more than a century old! But they are the kind of dinosaur that evolves & inovates always looking for something new! They are the kind of dinosaurs that made it into birds & flew/evolved out of extinction!

Completely different consoles and completely different sales trends. It's laughable to make a thread like this when the wiiu will pass the lifetime totals of the dreamcast before the end of the year.

Majorly different consoles. Don't get me wrong I love the dreamcast. But they front loaded the console with all these great games and lost so much money that when Sony came out with the PS2 people just didn't trust Sega to have anyone follow through and people kind of decided to move on. WIth the Wiiu Nintendo started slower with software and are getting better each year which will lead to the console continuing its trend of year over year growth. The Wiiu will likely triple the dreamcast in lifetime sales and will be infintely more profitable. And will also have more exclusive great games.  A lot of the steller Dreamcast content either got ported over to ps2 or sequalized on the ps2 and other consoles.

Your avatar is so cute, do you have a dacshund?

Its a sad story :(  I had a cute little Chug named bowser who I've had since a puppy but i had to give him up because i had this crazy gf who took over my life and I couldn't spend enough time with him. I use bowserthedog as my online name but I no longer have him. I just found that pic on google but it's not the actual bowser dog i had :(

Like a bump in the road could finish Nintendo. They've been alive for 100+ years, they're like little gaming cockroaches! They need to keep supporting Wii U until it dies and come out with a killer device for next gen. That's their best bet. But even if next gen bombs, which it probably won't and cant on Nintendo's watch, they'd still be making money most likely. Their goal, before all else is making sure they have enough money to keep doing what it is they're doing. No money, no company simple as that.

Wii U is turning out to be a great console with amazing titles.

It will pass Dreamcast sales this year and will be profitable to Nintendo.

No comparison since Wii U is still going to last at least 2 more years.

I feel so sorry for you :(

I have a little dacshund called Max... My advice to you, don't trust anyone that wants to part you with your pet! Go & get another one, I'm sure there is a dog waiting for you!

I don't give a damn what you think I meant, I'm telling you what I meant - move on and don't stick with a strawman argument. Mario Kart 8 boosted sales for a little longer than I expected. So? The Wii U is still selling miserably, and has been outsold by the PS4 almost 2:1 and even the XBox One looks like it'll over take its sales.

14 weeks is more than just "a little" longer than the 4 you predicted.

Do you want to bet that Wii U won't outsell Dreamcast lifetime?

Actually it dipped back down to the 40k mark a few weeks back if you remember - either way it still hasn't even hit 10 million.

Considering my point never was that the Wii U wouldn't outsell the Dreamcast, why would I make a bet on something I don't believe? Looking up what a strawman argument is because damn son, you are being a champion at trying to drag one out.

WiiU selling massively, what are you talking about?

Here is a better understanding of wat i mean, WiiU just outsold Dreamcast by over 245k last month. Its making more money as well.

Thread Over.....

But seriously, you think WiiU is in a worse situation than Dreamcast solely on the fact its install base is lower? Wats your take on the Vita then? Its sold less than wiiu, yes but its making profits

Since when is it "selling massively"? It's almost been outsold by it's competition who've been on the market for 50% of the time, and almost 2:1 in one of those cases.

The people in this thread saying "it makes a profit so it's okay" make me laugh. That's not how businesses run kids. Products aren't launched without an expected return. I can guarentee that the Wii U is woefully short of hitting the expected profits Nintendo were planning on having, proven by the fact they've cut the expected sales of the console numerous times.

If Nintendo don't bring out a successor in the next 18 months, they are dead in the living room - apart from ~10 million Nintendo fans, no one else will care for their console and that is far too small a market to bother investing in.

My first 3 sentences were sarcasm, not sure if you didn't knew.

"If Nintendo don't bring out a successor in the next 18 months, they are dead in the living room" Yeah, noooo. Nintendo has been doomed, dead since the 90s, i hear this with different words for years now. Nintendo still here.

BTW WiiU will be higher than 10mil (At least 14mil+ lifetime imo), not sure if you didn't notice it has plenty of life in it, even without third party. Funny thing is 10mil too small yet with the smallest install base now, it still has these games that outsell a majority of others.

The way you phrase things about Nintendo (from most of your comments) just feels like another person who just wants Nintendo to die off "Just Because". I feel a little bad now that i think about it, they arent going anywhere anytime soon :-/
