Forums - Nintendo - Is the Wii U selling bad, or it just continues the trend not considering the Wii?

Each console had more problems than the next. GameCube had more problems than the N64, and Wii U had more problems surrounding it than the GameCube. If Nintendo were to sell a console with the least amount of problems as possible, they would see better sales. But that makes too much sense for them to do. Create a console without problems? What sorcery is that?!?

Nintendo simply isn't as popular as they used to be. And I feel it's due to Nintendo's lack of things that set them apart from the competition. Sure, there's the games. But even Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon, won't sell consoles forever.

In many ways, I think Nintendo is stuck in the past a bit, and haven't really been able to keep up with the ever-changing consumer market.

Nintendo sets themselves apart more than Sony/Microsoft do from each other.  Their platforms have a gimmick that their console is built around to differentiate them and thir exclusives are nothing like Sonys or Microsofts.  The problem isn't being able to set themselves apart its that they are trying to hard to set themselves apart when the consumer's want what the competition is doing, and they're moving away from that.

It doesn't help that their leader is insecure about this company's ability to compete, not really a trait you want in a leader.

Nintendo is not good at competing so we always have to challenge [the status quo] by making something new, rather than competing in an existing market.”

Right, I feel like Nintendo can make a comeback but they have to stop going on tangents and work on meeting current expectations in areas such as online, and then exceed or surprise in some areas.  Just going on a surprise tangent only without strong core competence is a lot less likely to gain acceptance IMO.

Doesn't matter anymore, Wii-U is the last regular nintendo console, next they will combine handheld and console in one fusion machine and it will sell very well because POKEMON.

Excluding the Wii I'm seeing a downward trend in console sales..

I think Nintendo should just keep doing what Nintendo does best. Which is whatever the hell they feel like doing. There will be generations where they're the popular console and generations when they're not, but as long as they're fans are happy and they're making money, it's all good.

People have been shitting on Nintendo for being "too kiddy", or "casual", or "stuck in the past" since the 4th generation. The opinions of these "experts" never change, but clearly they do know what they're doing. Countless game companies have fallen, but Nintendo remains.

WiiU: 30-35m

It's more of a coincidence. Each cycle is more or less a whole new game.

If the N64 didn't use cartridges, and instead used CDs, there's no doubt it would have sold considerably better than it did.

Gamecube LOOKED like a children's toy, it was so bad that it was embarrassing to own one. Despite what some will say, it had a miserable controller. Not to mention the software was just not there, first party games were not particularly interesting. Third party games were dumbed down, and the important ones were just not released on the console. If Nintendo had not made it look like a purple lunchbox, and made a better controller, it would have sold much better.

The major problem with Wii U is that while there is the gamepad, Nintendo has not been able to communicate to the public just why it is a great thing. It is not simple and easy to show like the Wii remote. At least not for them, Nintendo completely failed with 3D on the 3DS as well, and that actually should have been easy. That on top of the fact that Nintendo continues to fail to release compelling content. Mario Kart 8 is simply not enough, it is just one game. The Wii U, in a way, is a console that no one can really effectively communicate why it is great. If Nintendo could do that, it would have sold much better than it did. It might be that it really just isn't powerful enough, and that is something PS4 has been able to communicate, and it's also been able to get the best and most comprehensive 3rd party lineup. Of course, it is kind of difficult to communicate that the Wii U has great software when it is constantly something that's way I the future with almost no information about it. The fact that no main series Mario or Zelda game has yet been released is a problem, they should be working on releasing Mario Galaxy 4 and Legend of Zelda U-2 by now.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

You cant take the Wii out of the equation though, why do people say the Wii doesn't count? It was a good games console with a unique control system, so good in fact that Sony and Microsoft mimicked it. I think its ignorant that people pretend the Wii never existed when downplaying Nintendo. Lightening in a bottle? a fad? who cares, the Wii bucked the trend and was Nintendos most successful home console, also proof that it can be done again.

A lot of you guys really just need to relax.. or get a reality check. Nintendo is going to be just fine, and isn't going anywhere. In fact, they are most likely going to outlast Sony and Microsoft in the console market. Microsoft can opt out at any moment they want. Would it really surprise you if there were no xbox next generation? A lot of you non Nintendo fans are hung up on what is going on with Nintendo and how much "trouble" they're in when you are completely ignoring what is going on with the other two parties. Sony is still dying. They are doing everything they can to keep their business afloat, and if i were a Sony fan, I would be extremely worried. It really wouldn't kill me if there were no PS5 or PS6.. I don't really care to be honest with you. But if Sony can't get their shit together, then they're not going to be able to do this anymore. I don't know what tricks they have up their sleeves, so maybe somebody can outline how they plan on saving their company. That's something a lot of you PlayStation guys should know about since a lot of you seem to know exactly what any of the big three need to do to keep their businesses afloat. Really though, I would be interested to hear what Sony could do to turn things around.

I'm a Nintendo fan, and it would very much affect me if there were no 7th or 8th Nintendo console, and I am telling you right now, I am not afraid of that in the slightest. Nintendo is in the process of creating a business model that keeps them sustained off of 20m consoles every five years. They can survive off of a game selling less than a million. Can you say that for the other two? lol. No you can't. Nintendo has everything they need. They make their own hardware, they have complete control over all their software, and they have a fanbase that is small admittedly, but is always going to give them a nice chunk of sales, and remember, they don't need that much anyway.

So basically, I would really be more concerned about what is going on with one of the other guys, because Nintendo is here to stay. There really is no question about that.

My 2 main reasons for never considering a wii u are the controllers and the 1998 graphics.
