Forums - Nintendo - Is the Wii U selling bad, or it just continues the trend not considering the Wii?

i don't understand the 'chances are it won't happen again' line. i mean, chances to begin with were that the wii would never happen/succeed and, guess what, it did. and it happened just as the ds set the record for best-selling handheld. so that one-two punch was even more unlikely. i know this is vgchartz but let's not slip into the console sales equivalent of astrology here.

in any case, what i was trying to say, and what iwata was saying in your quote, is that nintendo at this point in its life as a company values originality over everything else. the wii u didn't work out for them as they hoped, that much is clear. but do i think originality will be rewarded in the long run? yes i do. they're already in the black and will be for the forseeable future with new 3ds and the wii u's 2015 line-up plus the legs of smash and mario kart. more importantly, the wii u is not superfluous at this point. it's distinctive, if nothing else. and that's not something that can be said about xbox one/ps4.

It won't happen again cause that market has moved on.  Nintendo knew that when they designed the Wii U so they continued to try to chase them by building a tablet like controller to attract mobile gamers and it failed.  Nintendo has only ever had one console where they attracted that audience.  One out of six, especially when the last console was built around attracting that audience does signify that it won't happen again.

Their handhelds on the other hand are a different subject and not what this is about, this thread is about home consoles.

Their obsession over originality is hurting them more than its helping them.  Now that they see they can't get that market back they are desperately trying to get their old fans back, a task that would have been much easier with a traditional console.

simply not true. the nes/snes were the mainstream consoles of their respective cycles. the nes in particular sold 60m in vastly smaller industry than today's; that kind of success, if it happened today, would probably exceed the wii's. so 3 out 6 home consoles were unquestionable hits that won their respective generations. it's a better record than microsoft (0-3 or 1-2) or sega's (0-3), though admittedly not as good as sony's (3-1 or 4-0). and in handhelds, nintendo's 4-0 (gb, gba, ds, 3ds).

as for the casual audience you say is gone to tablets/phones, that audience is now going for the ps4 in droves. and tablet sales are down, while many big mobile game makers like Rovio and the mattrick-led Zynga are doing horrendously. trends are just that, trends. they're temporary. companies that have staying power figure out ways to work around them.

The NES/SNES were succesful because of gamers.  The audience I'm talking about is all the parents/grandparents/non-gaming children that only like just dance or w/e that went in droves to buy the Wii.  Its the people that would not normally buy a gaming console, but did so for the Wii because it looked so revolutionary that they felt they needed to try it.  That is not the same audience that is buying the PS4.

so you're saying nintendo's goose is cooked, they better just pack it up and go back to making playing cards? you seem to be saying everything is set in stone, nothing can ever change, etc., as tho the world is a kind of clockwork train that goes round and round on the same track with no deviations whatsoever. unfortunately that's not how the world works. tablets and smartphones didn't exist 7 years ago. now they do and they've changed everybody's calculus (the dualshock 4 has a useless touchpad, doesn't it?). that doesn't mean they'll always exist in exactly the same capacity, and the fact that tablet sales are way down in the last two years (to the point that google may abandon their own nexus line) is a good indication that that fad is dying down atm. we'll see, won't we?

Yes ofc trends change, but the thing is Nintendo was building their console in accordance with the trends and its still not working for them.  They can't seem to adapt to the trends, they knew where their target market went so they attempted to adapt to fit that trend, but they couldn't do it.  The sole reason for the tablet controller is to attract that audience because it sure as hell doesn't have any must own gameplay features for gamers to go out in droves to get a Wii U.  I'm saying maybe its time to target a different market.

so we're largely in agreement then. wii u was a disappointing (but now profitable) experiment and they're already planning for their next platform/hybrid which will probably try to appeal to the audience you seem to suggest the wii u should have tried to appeal to (going by miyamoto's edge interview, that seems to be the case, anyway)... so as i said, we'll see. no use pretending to know what it is right now, b/c we don't.

once they do announce it, if you find the product objectionable for the reasons you've outlined, feel free to bemoan their abandonment of 'core gamers' etc. atm all that hue and cry is really beside the point. it's obvious the wii u has not worked out as they expected. they're trying to make the best of it (and finding some success). that's that.

The Wii was developed by the Illuminati to keep the population distracted while they do their thing. So it's actually not a Nintendo console.

Its selling bad. Right now it doesn't even look like it will pass the gamecube.

i'll take you up on that bet if you're up for one. wii u will sell at least 21.74m units by the end of its lifespan. (i think 8th gen for nintendo is going to look awfully close to 6th for both the 3ds and the wii u.)

Does anyone have the sales numbers for their handhelds?

Sure, I'll make a bet with you. Its gonna be a while before we find who wins though...

Both really. It is selling in trend with GC. But, it's also selling bad because it's getting less games & attention than GC had.

My 8th gen collection
