Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Yahoo: Pokemon is killing Nintendo because its selling too well

You know, I would love it if Nintendo entered the mobile market with versions of their major franchises... and then released their software exclusively on Android platforms just to piss people like this guy off even more lol.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Although this article is a little over dramatic, it is heading in the right direction. The responses on this site are just as outlandish as the opinion posted in this piece.

Nintendo needs to do something while they still have strong brand power. They have no chance against the likes of Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and Sony. Sony's smart phone buisness is seen as a massive failure at this point, and they are still selling 40M a year. Samsung and Apple, are selling nearly 40M units a quarter.

All of these devices have multiple full fledged music, movie, TV, and E-book services that Nintendo can never compete with. These plaftorms have an openess that a Nintendo device will never copmpete with. And each new iteration continues to outperform Nintendo hardware with a biggger and bigger gap. The control options are getting much better on many android and apple devices as well.

With Microsoft and Sony pushing more support for gaming out to their smartphones, and extending to outside manufactures, the reason to own a Nintendo device are getting slimmer and slimmer. People can already enjoy PS4 games on Sony's Xperia Z line phones, and PS Now is coming to Sony and non Sony Smart phones starting next year. Microsoft demoed Halo 4 running on the cloud last year, and will be coming with their own streaming based service. Nvidia has a massive push going for game streaming both from home computers, and cloud processing.

So, the two things smartphones were missing (quality games and controls) will be coming in droves over the next year. In return, the two things that kept Nintendo handhelds alive (quality games and controls) will no longer be a meaningful reason to purchase a Nintendo to complement a smartphone.

Then there is their home console situation, but that is another peice for another thread.

Nintendo games will never work on tablet/smart phone. The market and consumer base is just too radically different from their current audience.

I don't know where that theory comes from. The same people that are using smartphones are the same people using 3DS, or that used gameboys, or PSP before. The only difference is a lot of those people have moved to smartphones, because they just offer more, and for many the minimal to decent games available are enough to get them through the day.

That does not mean that a massive amount of those people are not looking for a quality gaming experience from their phone. Many people are ready and willing to lay down $40 dollars for a mobile game at the same quality as Nintendo or Sony's handheld offerings.

If Nintendo just tested the waters with an old title, then they would see the massive potential they are throwing away. If they put up Pokemon Red for $20 it would outsell these new Pokemon games by 10 fold, if they put it up for $5 it would sell 50M easily.

You misunderstand Nintendo. They're not about competing with other companies, especially not outside of the gaming department. Nintendo do their own thing, they like making games and as long as they're profitable it's what they'll be all about. They'll always have their games as the selling point - even if the public isn't all that huge, there'll always be Nintendo fans who'll buy their consoles to play Pokémon, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Super Smash Bros. and so much more. Tablets and smartphones might have quality games and controls, but they'll still not have Nintendo's biggest selling point, which is their beloved franchises.

I understand Nintendo, I have watched the industry for 20+ years. If that is what they are happy with more power to them, but when does it get to the point were they are just to small? Is 8 Million consoles, and 20 million handhelds going to be enough as there userbase continues to diminish?

There are a lot of people out there that are fans of a Nintendo franchise. I myself love Pokemon, and Mario Kart, but very rarley by another title from them. There are a lot of people in a similar situation. They like Mario or Zelda, but that is it. Nintendo is asking people to make a $150 handheld investment, and a $250 console investment in devices to play potentally 1 or 2 $40 -60 games on. These same people already have a $400 console and a $400 smarphone that they do everything else with.

If Nintendo really loves games, and wants to make the world happy by bring their visions to the people, then they need to go were the people are. No one will ever forget that they revived this medium, but but if they are unwilling to adopt, that and the rest of the company is going to sit comfortably in a history book somewhere in a smartphone web browser near you.

Is this a serious article or just a joke one?

both, they mean it serious, but they are yahoo news...

The guy doesnt even know that Castlevania isnt a Nintendo franchise. Its just sad...

Or maybe he's heard some news we haven't yet... heh. In all seriousness, though, there are ways Nintendo can enhance their brand in mobile gaming without resorting to microtransactions and shovelware. Let's se what they do in 2015...

Ah... the idea that the mobile market is the same as the portable market.

Its sad to see this kind of artcile, and person that just doesnt get it. Nintendo is not the kind of company that strives on fooling as many suckers as it can by any means possible for a short term result.

Wow, trolling Nintendo on Yahoo must bring a lot of clicks.

My 8th gen collection

Nintendo already had enough shock-therapy already, give them a break.

Why wouldn't Nintendo want to enter a medium where Apple utterly and unequivocally dominates so they could be an even bigger underdog than they are in the home console market? Gee, I can't imagine why. This article is so laughably stupid. The portable gaming market is still printing money for Nintendo this gen, why throw that all away for something that would be a huge risk? Especially since most Nintendo fans have made it clear they have no interest in dumbed down "tap-tap-tap" mobile versions of their great IPs.
