I've played the 1st and I wouldn't put it near my top 10 list.

Haven't yet played the 2nd.

There's no Mario in my top 10.
The closest to universal appeal would probably be Civilization.

I bought the N64 for super mario 64 and didn't like it all that much.

It really depends on WHEN you played certain games.

For instance, If you played EverQuest back in 1999, you would probably consider that game to be in your top 3 easily...It being the first fully realized 3D Massively Multiplayer Online Game with a dynamic world.

For Me, I would have to go with Little Big Planet 2....probably because im a creative person and that was Easily in my top 3 of all time.

Everquest is my nr 1 game of all time, yet it's definitely not for everybody. Dark souls is a walk in the park compared to Everquest.
ICO is in my top 3, great experience.

I played EQ, my top 1 mmo, but not sure i can put this on top 10 game i played ^^ for friend play yes, but otherwise no :)

The game defined an Era...... I think any gamers that are born after 1990 would not have it on their Top 10. 

Xenoblade Chronicles. It's about as perfect as a JRPG can be. Epic story, huge World, awesome cast.
