Forums - Nintendo - Eurogamer: Mario Kart 8 "best looking console game of the year"

Tagged games:

EG once again showing their bias toward Nintendo, there have been many games which came out this year which look much better than MK8 even though they run at a higher resolution and have anti-aliasing. That doesn't make MK8 a bad game, but only give credit where it is due.

Agreed, the DLC is amazing.

The new track are even more beautiful than the original ones.

So I guess this is a bad painting:

It lacks colors, the lines are not straight, you can 2 eyes on the side faces, it looks like a child painted it it right???

A great portion of what I call the "hardlycore gamers" seem to have a very narrow minded view of the world & games in particular.

I would say that maybe the lack of culture & open mind is what makes them enraged against anything that doesn't try to parrot reality, that's all they know, that's all they want in their games realistic FPS... yet they think they are so "superior" & hold the "truth" with their tunnel vision & lack of education!

Art is different than video games. When a game has pixel edges that's an objective flaw. When a game has low FPS that's also an objective flaw. I never said that I didn't find MK beautiful, I just said that some people find pixel edges ugly. If MK didn't have the pixel edges it would have been a better looking game. The lack of realism is not the flaw here. I don't know why you're bringing it in the discussion.

Also, stop being so pretentious. I dislike some Picasso paintings, but that does not mean that I'm uneducated or that I lack culture.

Many of you need to eat a REALITY pill.....................

Lets stop kidding ourselves here.

The only point here is that beauty is subjective & has nothing to do with technique.

Most of the gamer category I call "hardlycore" fail to see that... while technique helps you doing your stuff, it's empty without creativity, copying reality is not very creative, all you need is computing power...

I understand that MK8 is lacking some effects, AA & that it is not the most graphically technical game ever made, but there is more to the visual enjoyment of a game than what effects, pixels, shaders, poly-count, you can cram in 1 frame. The fluidity (FPS), camera angles, animations, details, art direction contribute to make a virtual universe plausible & belivable, there starts a bit of the magic of a videogame when you can immerse in it & have fun with it, lots of 16bits era games managed to do that without Uncharted quality graphics.

If you prefer other games for their graphics, that's quite all right, it's called taste, as long as your point of view is not the only 1 acceptable, you are entitled to your own personnal opinion. Myself I prefer Battlefield3 graphics over Battlefield4, despite knowing that the last one is more advanced from a technical point of view, in the end I don't like it.

What bothers me is this hive mentality that most of "hardlycore gamers" show, 0 tolerance for what is not the kind of games they worship & if it comes from Nintendo, you know that emasculating game making company, then they cry "burn the witches" & go apeshit how Nintendo should die or go 3rd-party because they are an insult to gamers... or something like that.

Enjoy whaterver games you like, but not for the wrong reasons, enjoy them for you, without minding what others think or want you to think, it infuriates me when I read narrow minded ill-logic, but in the end, what's left is sadness.

I actually agree, a lot of "Graphically" better games have some serious issues (assassin creed, watch dogs, call of duty etc.) that make them look bad. The only thing that is remotely close in my mind as the best looking is The Last Of Us HD (That game will always looking amazing in my mind). I pretty sure Grand Theft Auto V will be amazing as well.

Even Infamous at times didn't blow me away like Mario Kart did. (I'm a huge fan of Infamous and I thought it looked great, but something about Mario Kart's style.)

to those who agree who doesn't even have a wii u XD

While MK8 does look great, I find it to be a bit, let's say...conservative choice for "best visuals".

I would go with ISS or SO, as a good balance of technical achievement and art design...at least when it comes to AAA titles.

If i had to pick the 'best looking' AAA 8th gen console game so far, yeah, i'd probably pick one of those too. A good art direction coupled with great graphics can impress me a lot more than excelling in just one.

I wish i could pick Killzone:SF, because the forest level towards the start was absolutely stunning on both those fronts, but i found the majority of the game after that point was unable to hit that same level of quality. Even in terms of gameplay variety, it felt like the most 'complete' part of the game.

it looks nice as cartoony visuals its extremely coloutful but it dont make Wiiu any better if thats what people are thinking!!!

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

I actually agree. It's certainly more fluid and pleasing to the eye. Sure, some games display more polygons or have better shadows or AA or whatever, but MK8 just looks and feels perfect, which is all that really matters.
