He also says 'but I can have success in our own space if we're selling a lot of consoles and people are buying games'

Do you think they are really content with selling alot in #2 place? Microsoft want to sell more consoles, as do sony and nintendo. And I dont think they'll be content with their sales pace picking up at the sameish rate as ps4 sales have picked up (again due to holidays and probably destiny bundle)
Also having sold more consoles (i.e. winning) is better cause it has the buyers effect. A friend of mine is more likely to buy the ps4 if I have it, vice versa the xbox one.

I think they are a business, not a sports team. Winning isn't everything in business. Actually, it means very very little. There are hundreds of thousands of businesses out there that aren't #1 at what they do, but they are still very happy with the position they are in.

When you create a business, isn't the ideal goal to gain a greater marketshare?
Google own the worlds most popular search engine, they make miles more money on ad revenue than competitors because of that. They are in a stable position to do what they want while you have yahoo losing money and Bing buying them out.
Same thing here. Greater hardware marketshare leads to greater software sales. This isnt going to be microsofts last console. However if they sell 40 million less than PS4 globally lifetime, there will be conversations coming up saying "should we bother creating a new console when we know PS5 is coming out around the same time and has the momentum from PS4, we (microsoft) dont need xbox to be succesful"
