Forums - Nintendo - What Can Nintendo Do To Appeal To The West?

All their consoles but gamecube and their most recent console have done well(> 20 million) in America so I don't really understand the point of this thread. Hell 3DS might hit that level in America where there supposedly isn't any market for non cellular phone mobile devices. I don't think it's Americans as a whole Nintendo has a problem appealing to so much as the we do what Nintendont brainwashed 14-35 year old males who post on forums and only wants to play "Mature" games.

While those games make a pretty penny It's an audience I think Nintendo is better off without personally. I would hate playing MK online with that community of trolls. I've said it before and I'll say it again pleasing both audiences seems to be nigh impossible because the values of each market are built upon fundamentally opposing values.

Nintendo is making a corridored cover based third person shooter where you place your own cover and that audience derides it as an something that should be an cheap downloaded game. No winning with them. That sounds far more interesting than Gears, U4, TLoU or 1886 to me but I value mechanics far more than cinematics.

Nintendo has to actually TRY, to start winning back the western (MARKET....not 3rd party companies) crowd.

With Wii's mainstream success, the next logical step for Ninty was to try and win back the 'core" crowd, and aim for all around dominance.  Market research told Nintendo that many Wii owners also owned a PS3 or 360, so 2012 would have been a great time to get a big head start on next gen, and basically emulate what 360 did to Sony's ps2 market share.  But Ninty did not legitimately try, by launching such a weak console.  [The only way it seems Nintendo will make a big effort to compete for that market, is if one of MS or Sony leaves the console biz.  Lets not forget, Ninty's rep has been shaky with the core crowd ever since the Mortal Kombat on SNES didn't have blood compared to Genesis version.]

After U's failure, I believe Nintendo will shrink into themselves even more (i.e. Fusion concept).  Ninty's view on gaming the last 8 yrs is to (paraphrase)" not be dependent on the tv", first by making Wii/U a small insignificant box, to the U's gamepad off screen play, and now 3DS's ability to act as a gamepad on smash bros for Wii U.

They will aim to blur those lines even more when the main power goes to the next gen HH, and the home dock will be nothing more than a 1tb harddrive, and bridge to host and connect multiple controllers to the monitor.  I believe ninty is satisfied with tv upscaling and have no regard for native res ( Im not sure how much grunt the home dock will have at this point) Basically, just as Ninty remixed GC's power for Wii, something similar will be done for Fusion, it wont be much more powerful than U.  I also  believe Ninty is done with optical drives and move toward 32 gb cards, and push their eshop even more.

N7 handheld  will be in the range of $199-250 max

fUsion dock will be $99-150

Ninty is old school to the core, they don't cater to 3rd parties, & still feel its a privilege for companies to make games for their platform, and you are lucky if Ninty approves lol.    Their attempt to win the western market is making an irresistible, must have Ninty platform(s), that will succeed by supporting itself, and thus will have a large userbase to attract 3rd parties again.

*sigh* not going to bother with arguing over the fusion concept and its many flaws, merely going to say it could be half that price and if they marketed it like they did the Wii U, it would bomb just as hard. The only saving grace would be the handheld's rep, but their sales on every front would continue to decay.

A new, traditional home console that is more powerful than the PS4 in 2018 (easy to do, btw) with great marketing > Fusion or anything else you name with bad marketing.

Also, stop with the "Wii is as powerful as an Xbox/GC" myth.  Because that's what it is, a myth.  The Wii is estimated to be ~2x as powerful as the GC and more powerful than the Xbox.  There has never been a case where a console weaker than the most powerful previous gen console has done well.  Ever

Nothing japanese about two japanese men bowing in a japanese manner with japanese inspired music playing in the background.

Not at all japanese

yeah so what? could have been two black guys talking to the family instead. THe point of the advertisment was fun for the family. There is NOTHING Japanese about that message

Just admit your wrong dude and it wasn't simply about family, which tells me you are poorly informed.

Wii Would Like To Play campaign effectively marketed the brand new experience that the Wii offered. An exotic and excting japanese product that can be enjoyed by the west. The Japanese themes used in these commercials are quite delibrate, hence why it is recurring throughout each commercial. Are you going to dismiss that as well?

so you showed me a commercial that showed a white guy playing Metroid Prime. A FPS/adventure game. Yeah thats about as western as it gets. So i ask again. WHAT themes?

wow what terrible spin. Nit picks one commercial and ignores the rest of the commercial. @bold. I've already pointed them out, you just keep dismissing them

no you didnt. THe other commercial was the same guys but this time they were in an office building (a non Japanese one at that) playing Wii Sports and Wii maker. So again, what themes?

Wow really?  Why do you think they chose these two guys with japanese accents?  Why do you thinkt they chose that music?  It's to create the whole idea of it being foreign and exotic, something new froma  foreign land (Japan).  It's designed to engage people's curiosity.  You cannot remove the Japanese themes and have the same commercial.  And dismissing that shows you fundamentally don't understand marketing/directing/etc.

Just leave him. He refuses to acknowledge he is wrong. You can spell it out to him in bold, and he will  still find some way to spin it.

I think for Nintendo to be more successful, they need to play to their competitors weakness's a little more aggressively.

Right now, most Nintendo gamers are more or less singing the tune of "What about me?" when they discover they don't get Call of Battlefield: Generic Warfare 8343 on their platform. (Which is actually a good thing in my opinion.)

There are entire genre's of games that are pretty much non-existent on consoles that could be tapped into.

Their advertising could do with a little more work too.

Fact is 90% of the console market now is the Western gamer. A large chunk of Nintendo's handheld losses are coming in the West too.

Nintendo can't fix this just by throwing Mario, Pikachu, etc. continually at the problem. They need something that can be relevant to Western consumers and they need it fast.

My advice to them would be to cut a deal with Disney/Marvel. There aren't good games for a lot of their big IP like Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, Spider-Man/X-Men, etc.

Not only are there not good games for these hugely popular IP, they are the golden demographic ticket for Nintendo -- they appeal to kids AND teenagers AND even adults pretty much equally across the board. If the quality of the games was high they would sell, no doubt.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

They have been selling good in the west, better than they used to compared to Japan.

Simply make games for grown up players again like Rareware did back in the N64 days. Games like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct and also Mario and Zelda games that are much more challenging and less childish.

Those games are dead, thanks to Microsoft.
