Nintendo has to actually TRY, to start winning back the western (MARKET....not 3rd party companies) crowd.

With Wii's mainstream success, the next logical step for Ninty was to try and win back the 'core" crowd, and aim for all around dominance.  Market research told Nintendo that many Wii owners also owned a PS3 or 360, so 2012 would have been a great time to get a big head start on next gen, and basically emulate what 360 did to Sony's ps2 market share.  But Ninty did not legitimately try, by launching such a weak console.  [The only way it seems Nintendo will make a big effort to compete for that market, is if one of MS or Sony leaves the console biz.  Lets not forget, Ninty's rep has been shaky with the core crowd ever since the Mortal Kombat on SNES didn't have blood compared to Genesis version.]

After U's failure, I believe Nintendo will shrink into themselves even more (i.e. Fusion concept).  Ninty's view on gaming the last 8 yrs is to (paraphrase)" not be dependent on the tv", first by making Wii/U a small insignificant box, to the U's gamepad off screen play, and now 3DS's ability to act as a gamepad on smash bros for Wii U.

They will aim to blur those lines even more when the main power goes to the next gen HH, and the home dock will be nothing more than a 1tb harddrive, and bridge to host and connect multiple controllers to the monitor.  I believe ninty is satisfied with tv upscaling and have no regard for native res ( Im not sure how much grunt the home dock will have at this point) Basically, just as Ninty remixed GC's power for Wii, something similar will be done for Fusion, it wont be much more powerful than U.  I also  believe Ninty is done with optical drives and move toward 32 gb cards, and push their eshop even more.

N7 handheld  will be in the range of $199-250 max

fUsion dock will be $99-150

Ninty is old school to the core, they don't cater to 3rd parties, & still feel its a privilege for companies to make games for their platform, and you are lucky if Ninty approves lol.    Their attempt to win the western market is making an irresistible, must have Ninty platform(s), that will succeed by supporting itself, and thus will have a large userbase to attract 3rd parties again.
