Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How powerful will Nintendo's next handheld be?

Oh I agree the Vita has other reasons for failing; its lack of killer app software, watered-down-PS3 approach to games, and overpriced proprietary memory cards for a start.

But even 3DS is far behind DS in sales due to increased competition; mobile and tablet gaming is encroaching on the handheld gaming market from all sides, and I can only see it getting worse as mobile devices become more powerful.

It could get worse, or it could get better. I don't think power will be the deciding factor for mobile devices. If Samsung or Apple starts putting physical buttons on their phones, that will be significant. Until then, Nintendo has a niche to fill provided their games are popular and their asking price is not too high.

I dunno, I can't see any reason why this trend would reverse. 3DS is fighting valiantly against the tide, but I think a dedicated gaming handheld will be an incredibly tough sell come 2016/2017, even with popular franchises.

You may be onto something there. Quick, trademark is before Nintendo does! :p

(Or at least put it in your sig with a date, so you get to do an epic "I told you so" come 2017. ;)

with the new3DS right arround the corner, it seems like we'll have to wait an extra 1.5-2 years before a successor is announced, so 2016/early 2017 realease.

I'm betting on a slightly faster Vita (x1.5 / 2), with a 720p screen.
There's no reason for a 480p screen, it might even cost them more to put one since it's pretty obsolete nowadays.

ya holiday 2016 or spring 2017 is a safe bet, they should be able to release a moderately more powerful than Vita handheld by thwn for $199

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

I predict less powerful than the Vita's hardware.

No trend has to reverse. If the damage is already done, the market the 3DS has made for itself has no reason to shrink further. It follows that a more appealing product could potential outsell its predecessor in that market.

Anything is possible at this point, I see no reason to believe the next Nintendo handheld will be doomed to Vita numbers when Nintendo owns multiple franchises that tend to sell more games per release than the Vita has sold total hardware.

People see a mobile phone as an essential purchase, but not a gaming handheld. And if they can get their gaming fix on their phone, that will discourage many from spending the extra money on a handheld.

Yes, Nintendo has powerful franchises, but as we've seen with the Wii U, that's not always a get out of jail free card.

We'll probably just have to agree to disagree, but I honestly don't believe dedicated gaming handhelds have a future.

screens are old tech what we need on the next handhelds are holographics images or some kind of projector so you can play on a big wall lol

This is already true and has been true for the entirety of the 3DS's life. Gaming handhelds were never seen as an "essential" purchase. They are a luxury product when priced too high and a toy when priced low enough. Americans love to buy expensive things they don't need, so just because most people own a smart phone already doesn't mean none of them will want to buy a dedicated handheld -- as proven by the 3DS, which has sold more consoles in any single region than the Vita has sold globally. I have not seen any major change in the market within the past ten minutes which would convince me that Nintendo's next handheld will sell one-fourth what the 3DS has managed.

Before of thinking in power, 2 more important questiona are if they will keep the dual screens and if they will bring some new inovation.

N3DS already van run 3D pokemon, smash Bros, monster hunter, even xenoblade. DS couldnt offer these experience to gamers, so a hardware upgrade was necessary.

But now, almost all portable apealing games can run on 3DS, there is no big need for hardware improvment for now. Unless they bring a inovation in the way to play.

My bet is that they will keep with n3ds for more 4 years, just because i cant see any innovations, and only graphical would be enough to a normal time generation leap on 3ds case. Ill be pissed if the innovation is only a HD screen.
