seems reasonable, if you are going to spend $50m+ on a game it better damn well sell 2 million copies.

VGC has it at 2.34m so hopefully thats fairly accurate. If Capcom advertised it in the west a bit I think it could definitely be a new major franchise in Capcoms book.
AAA games refer to budgets. Though I'm not sure what the threshold
It makes sense that expensive games need to move a decent amount of copies to warrant a sequal.
If they make 30$ on each copy. That means it needs to net Capcom ~60 million.
I'd assume AAA budget means atleast 20 million today + advertising costs + (you need it to make some net profit, breaking even is not a success).
So combining that with their tendency to produce exclusively they just don't like to work on sequels.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

"Typical" AAA models are not healthy. They need to use resources efficiently. CDPR and ND are good examples of good management.

according to capcoms own numbers it's at 1.3 million (shipped), but I don't know if that includes Dark Arisen and when was the last update

I hope there will be a gen8 DD title aswell, I started the game 2 weeks ago and it's really something special.

I'd imagine handheld games would have a different barrier to reach due to lower production values.
Which would have some relevance if they had more than 2 handheld franchises -_-

True. I'd say it's toxic in more cases than not though. Look at how many studios it sank last gen.
That's actually a pretty sound strategy. Why waste money on something that won't earn you some? Hopefully this will ensure that Capcom will stepp up and actually make GOOD games and drop that shitty on-disc DLC practices they've had.
Or just start making AA games. I'd say that's what Nintendo is doing. Mario isn't AAA compared to Uncharted or Zelda isn't AAA compared to Skyrim.
I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!
Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
