Mr Puggsly said: Bottom line, people aren't buying the Wii U because they want to play 3rd party games. Even when the Wii U was getting those games, nobody was buying them. Granted the ports were inferior or lacked DLC, but better ports wasn't going to have much impact. 3rd party games sold better on the original Wii and those vastly inferior. People interested in that will continue to buy PS4, X1, or even PS3 and 360 for a few more years. |
Yep. By the time Nintnendo even remotely gave a damn about third party it was alreadt too late. They watched all the money Sony and MS were making last gen off of third party and decided to play ball. I remember about reading that when the Nintendo revealed their third party partners at E3 2012. Nintendo never listened to third parties requests a year earlier for all consoles to be of a specific spec type so the next generation of games could be put on it. Obviously they had no listened. Nintendo's internal disagreements and squabbles with third parties is the reason for their downfall with third party. The hubris level is insane especially for such a talented company.

Even if Nintendo was more accomodating to 3rd parties, they weren't going to get the core audience. That ship sailed with the Wii.
Why would core gamers buy another Nintendo console for those types of games? They already learned their lesson with the Wii.
While Wii U was getting some core games, it was still getting passed on for some noteworthy games like GTAV, BFIV, Destiny, sports games, etc. So it makes more sense to get a 7th gen console over a Wii U unless you REALLY want Nintendo games.

The multiplat gamers Nintendo had fled after the SNES era when devs cited the superiority of CD's and Nintendo's reverting back to the cartridge as a reason to support Sony. For four generations gamers who wanted just a bit more out of Nintendo outside of exclusives were conditioned to go outside for their gaming. The CD was Nintendos reason for bringing Sony into the gaming industry (well not Sony's but the went behind Sony's back and used the services of Yamuchi). After that they did business with Panasonic when they went and did business with SOny.
The Wii U in terms of power was a joke to most third party devs. Again...Nintendo made the device to serve their own ends and forced third party to make exclusives if they wanted to profit and make a game enjoyable enough for the console. Most of the gamers were cheaply made because third party (generally westerners) saw the W

Im sure they fled the genesis more than the snes but ok...
But yeah sony took a hge install base mainly because they provided a less stringant barrier of entry for developers. They also sweeten the pot for publishers with the cheaper alternative of cd.
Here is the thing though. That was almost twenty years ago. Nintendo then id completely ifferent now.
Publishers are asking for more and more control and hegemony and that asking price is too high for nintendo. Plain and simple. Look at ea access. Look at ubisofts comments about this. Its pretty obvious that they are askng for a larger piece of the pie.
We ar suffering because of it yes. But that is the indistry we have a hobby in.
