Out of those I'd only say the bolded are 'big exclusives'. The others are smaller games that aren't going to have anywhere near as much impact.

Comes down to opinion in the end.

No it doesn't.  Not in terms of game sales or system movers.

Yes it does, don't argue with me on this. I named titles off, you replied with your opinion of what  the big titles on Nintendo platforms would be. It's 100% opinion, not fact.

Are you saying it's an opinion if one number is bigger than another?  No this is when we use the term "Wrong."  MarioKart 8 sold 2.65m and Donky Kong: TF hasn't even sold 0.7m.  DK is NOT a big game.  Fact.

In this case you are wrong, numbers are not a measure of what is considered big.

Sorry I laughed myself sick on that one.   Yep Destiny is a "Small" game for Activision with its $1,000,000,000  in revenue within the first week since its review scores weren't perfect.  You are the definition of someone who lives in their own world.

Or I live in a world where people have opinions and aren't afraid to express them. Destiny was caused by hype, end of story. Also Activision did not make 1 trillion dollars in 1 week from Destiny. Not only is that impossible that would honestly requires the entire gaming industry to buy the the game 10-100 times over. You're just picking apart my statements because you have no opinion of your own.

1) LOL that is a billion.  Math is not your forte I guess.

- FYI they made half a billion on day one (Can't find first week so I must have made a mistake on that one).

2) End of story?  Could it possibly be that reviews aren't all that matters?  Or is it only YOUR opinion that matters?

1.) The commas throw me off (since I never use them in numbers, or math for that fact). I knew the billion in a day from Destiny since it was headline news at pretty much every gaming site.

2) End of story with Destiny because it was all based on hype. Duke Nukem Forever wouldn't have sold what it did without all that hype. Hype is a big factor.

I never said reviews, you said sales are what make a game big and right there you contadicted yourself by saying "Could it be possible that reviews aren't all that matters?". Pretty much countering your sales argument and any other argument you could make. I said I gave my opinion on the matter, end of argument. You have nothing here, and you are trying to bring facts in to where someone made an opinion. It's obvious this place runs on facts, but there is opinions on this site. Sales are never an indicator of what is big. What the consumer values in a game and what they can continue to value for years to come is what will be big.

Destiny has in under a month sold 5000000 copies (left the confusing comma's out for you).  Duke nukem hasn't even sold 2 million, and its sales fell to nearly zero right after launch.  THEY ARE NOT COMPARABLE IN ANY WAY.

"Sales are never an indicator of what is big."  Yeah and Big Summer Blockbusters' didn't get their name from their large budgets and sales.  Dude I can't tell if you are just tryin' to F with me at this point.

This 'hybrid' console isn't going to happen. If they did this they would lose a small fortune by cutting their revenue from software sales in half.

Everything except the wii U has made a profit thus far. The Wii U is currently making a profit so it should be able to be profitable by the end of its life cycle as well.

This isn't true. The losses from the gamecube and n64 were hidden from the massive profits of their handhelds.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2481975

Did you read your link? It's using the a vague statement about the 3rd year of the N64's life. At this point, there wasn't much for them to lose money on as there weren't many big projects later on in its life.

The problem is that most people are just looking at the unit sales for consoles like the Gamecube when they should be looking at hardware + software plus the money they make off of "other hardware" (which includes peripherals and accessories).

The "Other Hardware" category is largely skewed towards consoles because that is where most peripherals and accessories are sold.

Below are sales for the years that are covered by the Gamecube:

Console and Handheld Sales for FY 2001-2006 (Hardware + Software) in Millions JPY (¥)

Fiscal Year Handheld Console Other Hardware
FY 2001 354,532 163,114 26,878
FY 2002 255,615 200,879 41,453
FY 2003 318,086 140,628 49,679
FY 2004 352,301 116,418 41,690
FY 2005 396,530 75,171 32,947
FY 2006 665,979 238,839 54,258
Gamecube was released near the tail end of 2001 (JP/NA)
DS was released near the tail end of 2004 (JP/NA)
Wii was released near the tail end of 2006 (JP/NA)

Same Sales Info as above but with "Console & Other Hardware" added together

Fiscal Year Handheld Console + Other Hardware
FY 2001 354,532 189,992
FY 2002 255,615 242,332
FY 2003 318,086 190,307
FY 2004 352,301 158,108
FY 2005 396,530 108,118
FY 2006 665,979 293,097

why would there software revenue be cut in half? think of it this way, wouldnt games like 3D World, Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 have sold better and made more money if they had released on 3DS instead of Wii U?

smaller budget+more units sold=higher profits

LMFAO at this thread title. Nintendo's only true "failed attempt" of a console was the Virtual Boy. All their other ones have either been wildly successful or at the very least a success. I mean they just won last gen's home console race AND the DS is the biggest selling gaming system ever to top it all off. 3ds is no slouch either. As for Wii U's disappointing start, it isn't over by a long shot so I'm not judging it until we have more definitive sales for it. And even if it ends up as Nintendo's first failure of a home console after 30+ years in the industry, that's still no reason whatsoever for them to up and leave the hardware industry.

Software sales wouldn't halve though. They'd probably increase if anything.

They could still have multiple hardware iterations -- a tablet, a smaller handheld, a VitaTV like home console (and make money off controller/accessorie sales here).

What would be central to it though is a iPod/iPad/iPhone style centralized game structure, where you can sell the same games on all of the hardware iterations, just like Apple's iOS app store.

Take for example a game like Super Mario 3D World. Right now it can only sell to a maximum of 6.5 million Wii U owners (give or take). If Nintendo's 3DS could handle Wii U graphics and they had a unified store architecture that allowed them to share games though ... suddenly that same game can now be sold to 50+ million consumers (44 million 3DS owners + 6.5 mill Wii U owners).

Failed attempts ?

Somebody forgot the 100+million Wii´s, 150+million DS and 45+million leading 3DS.....

@foxtail

Other hardware can just as easily be for handhelds, like cases, stylus, screen protectors, etc. I would be shocked if handhelds didn't make up a large portion of the "other". While you'll sell more controllers, you have 20 million to draw on vs 100+ million handhelds. This is really just semantics from an incomplete picture we have due to lack of good information.
