skewed entirely by free month users.

Entirely?

I thought it was 48 million. 17 million seems low. But these accounts make sure healthy cash flow to console makers.

How would he know no. Of gold subs?! Seems like he pulled that out of nowhere

Well its possible MS told him the userbase his game would be available to.

I feel like that's information they should know before bringing their F2P game to a platform.

I doubt MS would up and tell them that, especially info that is significant as that. If anything they would have made them sign an nda first. It's financial and competitive information.

That's an awful lot less than i would have expected o.O I suppose a lot of people must settle for Silver.

Wie, that's... Not so much...

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Well, accordning to MS, some 48 million has an XBox live account: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/bythenumbers/index.html

However, those numbers also include Gold subscriptions. But I have a hard time believing only 1/3rd would be Gold accounts, my guess would be that it is the other way around. And the guy in the interview in the OP doesn´t seem very sure about the number :P.

We don't know how many "active" 360's are out there. But it's definitely way less than over 80 million. Same would apply for actice PS3s.

Xbox Live has to be what makes Xbox financially worthwhile.

17 million is massive. The X1 appeals to core gamers so that subscription number should remain high in the coming years.

This sounds about right and it is massive.  If the average person pays 50/year, and you assume these are mostly main accounts,

is nearly 1 billion every year.  A few years in and it pay for itself.    And, the paywall existed to get people who didn't care about multiplayer.

I thought it would be higher. We always assumed it was around 25m. How does this compare to PS Plus?

When PS4 released Sony said PS Plus grew about 400%. So I'd guess between 3 - 4 million.

I can't prove it, but I suspect online gaming might be down compared to several years ago. Which should be expected given online games haven't changed much over the years.

You have to consider the average gamer isn't playing online.

Unless you're an avid fan of a competitive game(s), there isn't much of reason to pay for online gaming.
