Forums - Sony - Hajime Tabata wants to make Final Fantasy XV "more casual, one button action"

Pretty much. They need to use Toyota land cruiser in XV instead.

Only reason they'd do that is because they are Japanese. Else they'd be using an actual off road vehicle like the Land Rover Discovery 4...

... but lets not turn this into some kind of competition...

Not going to watch the video (ever), however that car does not look appropriate for off road activities...

Why, I use my Audi S5 Cabriolet for off road activities all the time

Yes, if they want to go about 20 miles instead of 100.

And you call yourself a Brit.

Hmm, pie.

Ok, what's up with all the silly "the other FF games were one button games, so what's the big deal?" comments? Of course, they were one action button games, they were friggin' turn-based RPGs where the action button was to confirm what action you wanted a character to take. THIS game is an ARPG, so you're not confirming you're characters moves from a list of actions, you're actually hitting a jump button to jump and an attack button to attack. Got it? Good.

1. Now, the way this guy is talking, it seems there is just one button for attacking for the player to push, and the character AI determines what the best form of attack is for the enemy you are attacking or the situation you are currently in. In other words, limiting the players choice just for the sake of appealing to casuals. If this is the case, fuck this game.

2. I also hate that there is no more mention of airships, just a stinking car. Which you can have drive itself, again, a choice trying to appeal to casuals. Though, the last time I checked, even casuals like driving in games. It also makes me worried that they may have decreased the size of the world map to accommodate being able to drive around the whole thing in a relatively slow car.

  1. Unfortunately he is not making himself very clear about the whole one button thing. Look at it this way though, you still do all the micro management you want to do. Only difference is that you do it before your fights. Basically, that Character AI you mention (Gambits)? You are the one that sets it up nd configures it. You mix and match moves (offence/defence) based on a vast number of situations and as he said simply press the attack button or defend button to do the stuff you have already preconfigured when in those situations.

The depth is still going to be there, the control is still there, you just spend more time vying or managing you position in real time since those will determine which or your preconfigured move sets will be available to you to perform. Personally I feel the only way this even remotely appeals to casuals is that they would have auto presets that you can use and thus the casuals will only ever need to choose from the aggressive/defencive gambits presets and play the game. They probbaly would not be able to use the auto stuff and beat the harder bosses and even at that they may still need to be spot on with other areas of the gameplay system to get ahead. The fans can delve as deep into the gambit system and build extremely eloborate AIs for their characters and elaborate move priority systems (which I guess is what Tabata meant by Card deck) for the main character. Honestly I am looking forward to it all.

  2. There has never been a FF game that they mentioned airships before the game was released. Yet most of them has an airship in some way or form. Its kinda a FF thing. They showed a demo of the game that is supposed to be from th beginning of the game and you somehow expect them to be talking about something that is usually only ever made available in FF games at the final third of the game?

That land cruiser is different than the one we have in the middle east, ours is designed for desert, it is a total beast. Not fair.

Land Cruisers are excellent off road vehicles nevertheless. They're not only "actual" off road vehicles but also among history's greatest. It's just that Toyota has been a bit too relaxed to care about the competition since their cars are going to sell anyways.

I know, little bit of sarcasm in that.

And favouritism, honestly not sure why anyone would buy a 4x4 that isn't a Land Rover (Range Rover).

Hmm, pie.

Pretty much this. Casuals won't bother defeating omega weapon, or searching for a secret place, or investigating about side quests that reveals extra information about some characters, or grinding for the ultimate weapon. I remember a friend of mine played Final Fantasy VIII only for the main story, like a casual player, and he did it until disc four. Unfortunatelly he couldn't beat Ultimecia and i had to use my save file to show him the end. Perhaps in Final Fantasy XV a casual player won't be severely punished when confronted with the last boss.

Exactly, I made a thread that talked about how the gameplay s likely to work based on a patent filing by the team and for the most part it seemed to have been met negatively. I think a lot of people simply can't wrap there heads around how a system like this can work, which isn't a bad thing except for those that seem to be branding the game as bad simply because it doesn't comform to whatever they think it should be. Every gameplay analysis I have watched seems to point in the direction of what I described in my thread and I am personlly "cautiously" stoked for this game.

I can see wht they are trying to do. Whats funny is that they are trying to do more and go deeper and flashier than any FF before it, while making it seem minimalistic and easy to get into. I see the potential. I have a feeling this will be the best FF game ever made. Then again maybe thats just me.
