I think the problem with the Final Fantasy series is as the graphics have gotten better, it's harder to take the story as seriously. When a dude with 15 zippers on his leather jacket and a Korean pop-star hair cut is telling you about his rough life with voice acting, it's kinda hard not to chuckle at the cheesiness of it.
I think it's a mistake to make characters in a fantasy game like this too contemporary (like driving a modern looking car and what not), I also don't understand the obsession with male characters that look like women, I get that US games aren't much better with the bald space marine thing, but still.

I see what you mean with the story thing as the graphics get better, but this is actually a big new take on FF. This is the first "fantasy based on reality" game so keep an open mind.
As for the characters, you just have to accept that there are regional design tropes we have to live with. The japs ALWAYS make their characters look like this, they are never about bulging muscles and crew cuts but always about excessive good looks that make their characters borderline heterosexual. Just look at practically every single japanese game. Hell, even some of their most popular actors look like that. eg?

THOSE ARE ALL REAL PEOPLE!!! AND MALE ACTORS.
This is why i find it funny when people talk about the character design in japanese games. You can see where their games get their inspiration from.
