Forums - Nintendo - If Super Smash Bros Wii U doesn't come out this Holiday, will it cripple the Wii U more?

I hope it comes out this year, I am a die hard Nintendo fan since the SNES days, but Nintendo has pulled crap like this before (Spaceworld 2000 Zelda Gamecube demo anyone?). I really hope a week or two after Smash 3ds is release we heard a plethora of info solely on the Wii U version. If not, they can kiss 2nd place in this gen GOODBYE!

How the devil is the Zelda demo from 2000 remotely comparable to this situation?

As for second place this generation, unless amiibo takes off massively, Nintendo can kiss second place goodbye: they simply don't have the software support to maintain a higher global baseline than Microsoft, who will continue to receive large amounts of third party support. Nintendo, without a mass-market hook, and with Wii U having failed to make any meaningful headway so far, aren't going to turn the system around now.

As for Nintendo not announcing details on Smash U yet, it does make sense. Every reveal up until the last few weeks has largely composed of footage of the Wii U version. The majority of footage at E3 was for the U version. The 3DS version is getting attention now because its release is imminent, Nintendo can turn the spotlight onto the Wii U version once the 3DS version is out the door globally.

As for Bayonetta 2, we're getting information now because the game is close to release, around 6 weeks away. If Smash U is debuting late November/early December, Nintendo should host a Smash U Direct sometime next month. There's clear precedent for Nintendo to do this; Aonuma wanted to reveal Zelda U at E3 2013, but held off because of Wind Waker HD and Link Between Worlds. Mario Kart 8 had a Direct one month before its release, Hyrule Warriors had a Direct last month. Wonderful 101 had a Direct a few weeks before release.

Nintendo have announced pricing details for amiibo globally. Smash U is the launch game for amiibo, and amiibo is still coming this year. A delay isn't on the cards at this point.

Because Nintendo told us a lie. When they released the then realistic graphics on how a Zelda game would look on the Gamecube, they hyped it up as if to say this is how our next Zelda will look like. Instead we got WIND WAKER, just completely destorying the hype they built around the next Zelda game, and many Zelda fans (both casual, hardcore and including myself at the time) felt cheated, scammed, and lied to. I then still game WInd Waker a try, it felt like a Zelda game, and it was a GREAT GAME, also spawning 2 REALLY fun sequels on the  DS, but still, the remnants of WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN was still in my mind (Thank GOD for Twilight Princess are else we would have NEVER KNOWN).

To give you a better example, me and 3 other friends had Ocarina of Time. They aren't hardcore Zelda fans like me, and when they saw the Spaceworld 2000 video they were sooo hyped. But when they saw Wind Waker, they were REALLY ashamed that they even bought a Gamecube. I was the only one in that group to buy it. But when they saw how Twilight Princess looked like that bevolved game that they saw in Spaceworld 2000, they immediately resereved a Wii with Twilight Princess.

Now with Smash, again they are building SOOO MUCH HYPE on how they are going to release this game this year. With the Characters, with the old school GC controllers, with all these screenshots. But now it might now even come out this year, again disappointing their fans like they don't care about them. Again, we feel, cheated, lied to, and scammed. Same EXACT situation? NO. Similair situation? Very much so.

I still believe Nintendo can catch 2nd if they play their cards right. Xbone is almost a clone system to the PS4, and Microsoft have done IMO more to hurt their fans than even Nintendo has (and that is saying A LOT. RRODs, not accepting used games on it initially, $500 + asking price with a FORCED KINNECT ring a bell anyone?)

Bayonetta 2 and SMASH Wii U are both supposedly close to release, they are just a month apart. But by the amount of info we know about Bayonetta 2 compared to Smash Wii U, they seem YEARS apart. Something is just a LITTLE fishy...

It is indeed very sad for talented developers. But that doesn't mean it won't happen.

Well, it actually does, because said developers and said "good games" will not be on said phones. There will always be a market for dedicated gaming just as theres still a market for books (a big one at that) in spite of the fact that digital was supposedly going to do away with print.

The issue is, here, that the costs, systems, and developers are so massive now that you need multimillion sales to even break even. The 3DS has(d) a different problem: software limited because Nintendo was pouring their time into salvaging the WiiU.

I don't dispute there's a market for dedicated gaming hardware. I just won't think there's a future for dedicated gaming handhelds.

I disagree with you here. I feel that there will still be a need for handhelds because they can get one thing right that smart phones can't: Controllers.

I've tried to play DOOM and many other games on my phone, but it simply doesn't match buttons that a handheld and a hardcore gamer needs to succeed in games.

Nintendo is finally getting with the program with releasing new hardware in the New 3DS to match smartphones and tablets. They should do this MUCH more often, because as trends show, the only thing people love more than technology is NEW TECHNOLOGY. People will still eat it up, just like they eat up all those new tablets and smartphones.

Now if they really wanna be successful, they should get apps that are available on many smartphones already, (besides entertaining apps) and somehow intergrate it within their portable devices, but maybe I am just being too idealistic now.

For the record, I don't think you are being bias. You are just blatantly honest. And I feel the same way about Nintendo as you do, even though I'm an Nintendo fan

Thanks. :) I'm a Nintendo fan too, which is why I criticise them, because I want them to do better.

I must confess, I'm not overly familiar with the new 3DS though, in what way does it "match smartphones and tablets"?

The New 3DS has a boosted CPU, most importantly are it's internet features.
Like the Wii U, the New 3DS supports HTML 5. The internet runs more faster/efficiently then that of the original 3DS line, quicker game downloads, and boosted CPU for bigger game worlds etc.

That is the gist of it anyway. Plus it has the NFC reader for Amiibo. The NFC reader and boosted CPU, implies to me, that the New 3DS will be somewhat more compatible with the Wii U. The 3DS had some functionality with the Wii U, but it was fairly minimal. I believe Nintendo aims to rectify that, and the compatibility will help boost interest in both platforms.

Don't forget that it has Wii like graphics too, otherwise it wouldn't be able to handle a Xenoblade Chronicles remake.
