Forums - Sony - So is PS4 "saved" in Japan?

I wouldn't say it's saved yet, no. IMHO, there's a lot of work that SCEJA and its 3rd party relations need to do. I actually question why DQX port wasn't announced for PS3/V/4. I have to think it's either because contractually, Nintendo made them sign not to release it on any Playstation (unlikely) or there's no point to releasing it on PS platforms and compete with FFXIV. More likely though, they might be waiting to release the 3DS game first and then announce the PS ports. There's no reason not to have an MMO on every available platform (possible exception when platform holder creates barriers like MS with FFXIV). If SE wants to bring that out west, putting it on PS4/3 and even Vita make a lot of sense. So IMO, SCEJA still needs to secure more DQ, ideally mainline games starting with the ports (VII and VIII HD) and remakes and landing the big one (XI), Monster Hunter 5 on PS4/PSV cross play (a la GE2:RB), FF remake, and, of course the big rumored JRPG from SCEJA as well as the rumored Arc the Lad (and hopefully LoD) reboots/sequels.

I also think SCEJA and PD are messing up big time by not releasing a GT6:XL for PS4 (and possibly PSV) this December in Japan. This could start get the momentum going for the PS4 for 2015.

However, with that said, the list below looks pretty good and significantly better than the 2014 release that caters to Japan (only Yakuza Ishin, FFXIV - MMO, late port, and MGS:GZ - a glorified demo).

Looking at the sales split between the 3 above, and using VGC data, we get the following

FFXIV - 60K PS4, 270K PS3

Yakuza Ishin - 140K PS4, 250K PS3

MGSV:GZ - 140K PS4, 250K PS3

I think the split will get closer between PS4 and PS3, more like 50-50 and then PS4 will outsell it 2-1 and so forth. Most games in the OP should sell above 100K, with some going to 200, 300K+. I think DQH has a chance of 1+ million on both platforms, so depending on the split, it could do very well on PS4.

The most important thing about the list above is that the PS4 will possibly get a 100k seller per month, which could help keep momentum.

It just need Dragon Quest XI and then the PS4 will truly be saved

Honestly I think the future of Japan belongs to the next-gen Nintendo handheld (likely fusion platform). That will probably give you "console-like" games that are playable anywhere and have the full breadth of Nintendo's development support behind it (rather than being split between console/portable).

Throw in things that are likely to come like Youkai Watch 3 and Monster Hunter 5, and that system will own Japan I think in the future.

Casual gamers, females, and a chunk of the kids market will go tablet/smartphone only.

That will basically be the entire Japanese game market in about 4 years time.

Until that uncertain time, it looks like the PS4 is the place to go if you're into home console gaming in Japan. A japanese gamer, and who could blame them, wouldn't want to miss out on the next main FF, RE, MGS, KH, DQ and looks like you can add GTA to this list too.

To be honest most Japanese don't care. Gaming at home just isn't a big thing in Japan anymore, all those franchises were around last gen too and it was only really Wii Sports/Fit that grew the market temporarily. PS3 had most of those same franchises (and PS4 doesn't have Dragon Quest yet either, what was shown is not a traditional DQ game anymore than Dragon Quest Swords was for the Wii) too.

IMO PS4 won't catch even the Vita for a long, long, loooong time (if ever) in Japan.

Enough of them do care and that's all that matters. It's not like everyone in the west likes gaming on consoles either, but there still is a market for it. Those games matter a lot and they don't just matter in Japan, but in the rest on the world as well. You could afford to miss out on one of them, maybe 2, but not all.

The handheld market is no threat to those games as the main ones will still be made for consoles, DQ could be the exception here, but that's hardly substitute enough.

To be honest, I don't think it's enough.

You need to stop with the constant downplaying. Since joing the site you have yet to make one unsnarky comment about anything Sony related. These games will certainly help and we're just getting started.

I have a right to an opinion, just like you do. In my humble opinion, I don't think it's enough. You may disagree, but that's as far as I believe you need to go with this.

That's true. But what i'm pointing to is that you're not just voicing an opinion, but rather have an agenda. You can't make 387 bad comments about Sony related stuff and still pretend to be a neutral voice.

We can say the same about you bubblegamer, I not always agree with Quinton but he has a good point...

Can't say i'm surprised by your comment. But you'd be wrong if you were to say that about me. As i don't spend all my time cracking down on everything Nintendo makes. There is a difference between prefering something else and hating on something.

I'll wait and see. A lot of these games are still cross-plat so the impact won't be as pronounced, but it's a start at least.

I think that's a good start. Of course a lot of those games are coming out on PS3 as well and this will negatively affect PS4 sales, but if japanese devs see that with those games PS4 sales get better a little, I'm sure they'll be more willing to support the new console. Let's just wait and see.
