Also brand, Playstation brand is still a lot bigger/better than Nintendo brand in Europe. More people have heard of Playstation than Nintendo, my Mum for example.

^ Ah, sort of like how brand helped Nintendo beat Sony during the PS1/N64 era?
Would you're mom buy a PS3?
Of the 46 something million PS2's that were sold in Others, I would say that maybe 10 million really care which console they get, the other 36 million aren't loyal enough to care. Casuals FTW. And Nintendo has them, for all intents and purposes, locked.

1) Yes, the Sony brand was probably at its strongest in the mid nineties.
2) No, she wouldn't by any console. The point is she has heard of the Playstation, so would be more likely to purchase a Playstation product.

What about the Nintendo brand before Sony released their console? How come that didn't save them? And actually, I think Sega was bigger than Nintendo in Europe (or at least as big), so why didn't that save them either? Why did Sony, against two companies with brand reconition, beat them?
And... since it was Sony's first console, you can't say brand. Also, try to leave out price, since I believe the N64 was cheaper. And don't mention power, because the N64 was more powerful, and the Saturn was more powerful than the N64 I believe.

Which is exactly why the PSP has performed so much better than the Nintendo DS ... No wait it didn't But at least the PS3 is performing better than the PSP so its fate will be different ... No wait its performing worse The fact is that the "Brand Power" theory is crap, and if people cared that much about brands the Playstation would never have caught on

The handhelds are completely different, Nintendo has dominated that market with the Gameboy since forever. Not even Sega at their peak were good enough to break in and compete in the handheld market. Sony has done exactly that, and has about a third of the market. Just goes to show how strong the Playstation name is...

But they abandoned the "Gameboy" Brand and faced your superior "Playstation" brand and yet the Nintendo DS outsold the Playstation Portable ...

Because Sony was bigger than Nintendo and Sega put together in Europe. The Playstation made the gaming industry mainstream, especially in Europe, where previously it was very small compared to Japan and NA.

Sort of like how the Wii is expanding the industry to the extreme mainstream (and everywhere else for that matter)?

Nintendo made it very clear that the Ds was the follow up to the Gameboy. Also having Pokemon helps, Brain Training took off on the Ds, but Brain academy didn't for some reason on the Wii.
I should have made it clear that Brand can only go so far, it is just that the Playstation brand can go further than most. Taking a third of the handheld market away from Nintendo (which no other company has ever been able to do) is testament to that.
It should also be said that Mario isn't as popular in Europe as he is in NA. He is definitely popular, just not as.
