Here's an interesting post from NeoGAF, somewhat similar to Soundwave's proposals.

On the handheld side, I think his pessimistic view should be his optimistic view and his optimistic view is highly unrealistic even for 20nm. He mistook AMD Mullin's 2.8W SDP as TDP which is 4.5W (4W for the dual core). But, im pretty sure Mullins APUs are low power binned Beema(10-15W) chips, and I'm not sure if binned products are good baselines to use.


I'm not sure what you mean. I think 4W would be fine especially if they go with a larger  handheld like the 3DS XL.

When they make the chips, not all them are created equal, some have defects, high leakage, etc, and their will be a few that performs better than the others. Binning splits your yield and usually those special low power chips cost more mainly 'cuz yield is reduced, hypothetically speaking, lets say they got 100 chips and 25 of those meet low power requirements, that means you can only sell 1/4 of your chips to Nintendo. Would AMD/Nintendo want that, can AMD/TSMC supply Nintendo with enough chips and is Nintendo be willing to pay more for specially selected low power chips?

Project Fusion confirmed. Last year's rumored hardware specs match perfectly with all the current speculation and announcements by Iwata but the handheld display resolution would be still too low.

Poor yield percentages then. That makes sense, but that's true for all chips isn't it? Although the low power ones are worse probably. Ok, how much do the current Mullins APU's cost?

Nintendo does have unified architecture and to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if they kept it that way. It would be sort of cool if they made it backwards compatible to DS, but I think that might be a bit too much, but be like the first console to go backwards compatibility on 2 generations than just 1 generation and the rest Virtual Console.

 

I don't know about AMD because Nintendo have never used them before and they use ARM chips. I think it all depends on price and what it can provide and bring to their next-gen portable. I think they might wanna stick to Vita's Power, but maybe a bit more of a kick. They learned their lesson that it needs to be somewhat cheaper than the launch price of the 3DS. I have full faith they will do good with the next handheld.

Yea, probably not. But for AMD, the can sell the high wattage chips. But for a semi-cutom, idk what they'll do with the extras. Each batch would be wasteful=costly, unless they disable stuff and repurpose them for something else.



This is in response to the orginal post:

Nintendo has always used a ARM chip for their handhelds starting with the GBA and the majority of at least the first part of the article is about the new ARM chip set they are creating, so it is a given that they may use AMD for the "new" arm chip.

As for BC depending on what medium they use, I think they will stay with soild state carts since they are now the memory storage of choice atm.
